The price needs to be $99 locally (Australia) for it to be equitable. There is no excuse when the Aussie dollar is so strong against the greenback currently.

I imagine that the Kobo would also sell well in bricks and mortar bookstores (thinned out Borders and A&R) at that price also.

I don't know who has control over the device pricing. So, for example, it may be that one of the international "partners" contractually gets to set the price for hardware sales to/in that country. Kobo is (mainly) a Canadian company, with Chapters-Indigo owning a majority share of the business, but the device is not manufactured in Canada and I assume there are different import duties paid here than in other places.
