Actually, the best to date is the Panasonic Words Gear. The main problem with US comics compared to manga, etc., is a lot of color is used and most of them dark. I've tried many conversion utilities to get the best result on the Sony Reader, but nothing came through as very good for that device. That is the main reason I looked into the Words Gear device.

This device's screen is almost the same size as the Reader's, but it a little narrower. The major difference between this and others is the use of a higher resolution color LCD display. While you still have to view American comics in landscape mode, Japanese manga can be viewed in portait without any difficulty. The result of viewing comics (or any eContent in color) is miles ahead of the competition that is still based in shades of gray.

While I'm not much for having to view and book in landscape mode, it looks pretty darn nice. The only option better would be a TabletPC.

BTW I just finished one of the comics I picked up off of WOWIO last night, no conversion needed aside from the steps the Words Gear takes to copy it over.

Wow, I didn't know the Cybook could do that! Guess I never really looked into the original Cybook until now. Turns out it's basically a Windows CE device with a 10" screen! Just a quick few questions here, since it's in this thread... Where you able to find a decent PDF reader for it? I was checking the dimensions and saw they said it was an inch thick; is that correct? How about heat build-up while it's on for a long time? 35 grams (it's what I read), s that supposed to be ounces; in other words, 2 lbs 3 ozs, or is it really that light?

Looks quite promising for books, but I have a TabletPC that's the same size/weight so I thought I'd ask. Thanks!

^_^

BOOKEEN made its own pdf reader in several versions, so ...yes, it is possible to read pdf...but pdf comics are not displayed perfectly, I always had some problems with colours...I prefer html galleries.

specs:

Size: 8" x 10.1" x 1"

Weight: 35 ounces ( 1 kg, more or less , for europeans like me )

Design: Grey, removable black cover, integrated stylus

Screen: LCD, 10" 256 colors, backlit, Portrait or landscape mode, Touch-screen

Resolution: 600 x 800 pixels

Storage : 32 MB RAM, 16 MB Flash

Processor: Power PC MPC828e

Outputs: 16 bits stereo sound( plug for stereo headphones) , Integrated loudspeaker

Battery: 4 hours of autonomy ( 3 to 5 hours depending on brightness settings)

Operating systems: Windows CE 3.0

It does not get hot at all.
For me it is simply perfect, I convert jpegs in a html web gallery using "express thumbnail creator" or "web picture creator" and read comics using internet explorer...the main problems are :

-it is not easy to read in a sunny day (thats a problem in Spain), but it is perfect to read in the dark.

- it takes 3 or 4 seconds to go from one jpeg to the next one in the biggest pages.

- is not comfortable to carry one of this with you the whole day , I am looking for something smaller to carry in my pocket, to read everywhere...maybe words gear

I am also hugely interested in using pretty much exclusively as a comic reader not worried about greyscale, not worried about time between page turns - just care about readability- if anyone has actually tried those marvel pdfs itd be great to hear some impressions.

Yes, thats what i had come up with as well.
Now its dependant upon 2 things;

1) Marvel and Dc start releasing official CBR/CBZ format scans (the iliad reads CBR/CBZ i thought i read)
2) which would make ite asier to convince my wife i want to spend almost 1000 aus dollars on an e-reader.

itd be darn handy though.

If you want a cheap way of reading just CBR/CBZ, get an Asus Eee laptop, install comix and rotate the graphics, it's surprisingly good for reading CBRs with, you just hold the laptop like an open book, you only get away with it due to the small size of the Eee

I won't get a chance for a day or two, but I'll see what I can do, some of the text can be quite small, but I successfully read the Transformers Infiltration series on it, i do have good eyesight though

Looks nice, and considering that the Asus Eee will be available here in Japan in a few weeks for ~$500, I might just have to take a bite! Thanks for the shot.

Still waiting for the HTC Shift!
