I'd go for the iPad first, it is great for reading books that don't translate well onto a small screen, and I'd perhaps get a small, cheap mp3 player instead of the ipod touch if you mostly used it as a music player.

I picked the iPod Touch or iPhone because of it's small size. It can more easily fit in a pocket. I use the Kindle at home, but the iPhone when I'm out and about.

I'm thinkin toddler stickybuns was given the iTouch to play with so that a certain stickybuns could justify an upgrade. Which I think is awesome! But not having a toddler, and not having a device that really needs upgrading, how do I convince the wife I really, really need an iPad2?

Oh, I've been wanting to upgrade for a while now. The screen has several cracks; the iPod fell out of my purse and onto a concrete/cement floor--still worked fine but still pretty annoying. I was just hoping to put off buying a new one for a while since I was planning on spending my "fun" money on some new spinning and/or weaving equipment.

I'm sure that your wife has her own hobbies that she spends money on. If the iPad isn't going beyond your discretionary spending budget, then I don't see any reason that it needs to be justified.

Yeah I know, it's just me. We had to retire for discretionary spending budget to even be in my vocabulary.

In order of preference:
  1. iPod touch - small size, always with you
  2. Nook Color - tablet & ereader at half the cost
  3. iPad WiFi

I want to be able to sync with my Kindle, so I think the Nook is out of the running. Unless one can load a Kindle app on a rooted Nook? Still, I'm a bit weary about tossing the warranty out the window... not to mention needing to repurchase all of my apps so they're in Android format.

I have the Kindle app on my rooted Nook Color. If I need warranty work, I'll just un-root it and send it in. No big deal.

Re-purchasing apps is another story. That's easily a deal breaker if you use apps that cost money; something I don't do. I have a ton of apps on my Color and a ton of apps on my iPod touch; and I got all of them free. One thing I don't do is buy content for my tablets. If I can't find a free version, then I don't need it. YMMV.

I'd say the iPad, even though I use the iPad and my Droid X for reading. Lately I've been using my iPad more, but that could be because it's my newest toy, and I often use it for textbooks and PDF's which need a larger display. I use my Droid X for reading, mostly right before bed, since I dock it and also use it as my alarm clock. Once in a while, I'll sit on the sofa w/ my Droid X, but usually it's with my iPad or an e-ink reader.

I'm an iPad owner and I do use it for reading. I think it's a great e-reader. I had looked at a Nook prior to seeing an iPad but when I saw the iPad I could tell that I preferred reading on it. So, it may seem strange that I would vote for the iPod Touch as a second reader. As has been pointed, out the screen is the same size as the iPhone. I recently bought the Verizon iPhone. I thought it would make an acceptable backup for my iPad. But I have to say the retina screen is amazing. Yes, it is smaller but I have no trouble reading on it and I am at the age where I qualify for everyones senior discount. Don't get me wrong, when I'm at home I will always opt to read on the iPad but for on-the-go, the size of the iPhone/iPod Touch is very convenient.

I vote for the iPad. I love the large screen. I'm still on the iPad 1 and it is small enough even when I'm out and about.

My iPod Touch is nice when I'm traveling very light. When I'm that light, I rarely want to read so the iPad Touch is used for listening to music or audio books. Next year, I might get an iPhone and that will lighten my load even more.

I have an ipod touch and a kindle.

Find it difficult to justify an iPad because I also have a laptop. I carry the kindle most of the time either in my backpack or in my hand and do most of my reading on it. The iPod is small enough to carry everywhere even when I don't take the backpack with me, but I only use it for reading in the dark, its main use is for daily planner, contacts, e-mail and other apps. When serious work is required I take my laptop (which in that case is in the backpack with the kindle).

All in all, I don't see the point of buying something else because it goes like this:

Traveling light: no-frills cell phone+ipod, all my relevant information on the iPod and using the phone just for calls saves battery. Everything fits in my pockets.

Commuting without backpack: cell phone+ipod in my pockets and the kindle is light enough to carry in my hands for reading. Carrying the kindle 3 is no more burden than a slim paperback.

Commuting with backpack or business trip: I have space for all may gadgets in my backpack, reading on the kindle until it gets dark, then change to ipod.

Any time I need to do "serious work", I pull out the laptop, which is light enough to carry to a workplace and powerful enough to do any task I want. If I didn't have the ipod I would not buy an iPad, because it is more expensive and cumbersome to carry in addition to the kindle, while holding almost the same apps. I would probably buy a smartphone instead, but battery life is a concern when it is used heavily. With the iPod, running out of battery is not a great problem because I still have my contacts in my (basic) cell-phone.

For my dime, Kindle is too big to carry everywhere, so iPad would be even more so. I do a lot of reading on my iPod Touch in the little cracks of available time I have throughout the day, simply because it goes everywhere with me (an iPhone or other smart phone would be the same). The biggest problem with the iPod is its lack of battery capacity, which is effectively less than half of iPad's.

In terms of reading, pretty much the only reason I'd want a bigger screen is for PDF, which is not enough to justify an iPad for me. I have zero interest in digital magazines, at least until the ones I would want to read go digital.

Actually you can. I use the Dell Streak -- which is available at a very reasonable price and without contract at the moment as they are waiting for an update to the new dual processor model. It has double the screen size as an iPod touch or iPhone, but still fits perfectly in my jeans' front pockets.

Samsung has a 5" iPod look alike they just introduced, if you don't want a phone to go with it.
