It's not a "good enough" attitude, but what works best for me. I find holding a leather cover more comfortable than holding the hard plastic of the bare Kindle.

I always read mine with the cover on and, like others here, I tend to hold the cover rather than the Kindle itself.

I do occasionally hit the page turn button by mistake, but it is so easy to turn back that I don't find that a big deal. How often when reading a paperback have you turned two pages instead of one?

I think, however, that Amazon would have done better to make the page turn button much smaller -- about the size of the back button. And I never use the buttons on the LH side.

I do not consider that a cover is only "good enough".

I feel that leaving it unprotected is "not good enough", and is just making do.

I have invested money and time into it, and I have read too many posts where

Kindles have been inadvertantly damaged to want to have it happen to one of

mine.

Cheers

I have a Kindle 3 and use it without a cover when at home and with a cover elsewhere. Before buying an eReader I shopped around to see how they felt and looked before buying one. Like any other personal device, if you don't like the way it feels you should get something else.

I don't know if one exists or not, but what would be good would be an elastic strap that fits onto the back of the Kindle, then you just put your hand inside it to hold it that way.

I use the lighted cover and it works well. No extra buttons pushed.

Personally, I find the K3 page turn buttons a little limiting. I have a jetBook, and its arrangment of diverse page turn buttons means I can manage several comfortable hand positions. The K3 has a much more limited set of comfortable grips. It's a minor thing, but you do have to pay a little more attention on the K3.

I love it. But coming from a netbook and laptop to the kindle has been great.

I read without my lighted cover due to it's weight unless I'm in bed. I have tiny hands and arthritis so too much weight hurts to read for long periods of time. I do not like how the Kindle feels in the back. Where the seam is and the back of the page turn buttons. It's a little rough. I would love something to cover that part up to make it more smooth feeling but without adding too much weight to it. It would still need to fit inside the lighted cover as well.

Right now I use a throw pillow and my bookgem to hold the kindle on my lap so I can read. I don't really like the bookgem though. It's about taken my fingers off a few times and the Kindle 3 barely fits on the padded thingys and I'm always worried about it damaging it because of the odd fit. I'd love to find a better stand then the bookgem as it's really not made for the Kindle 3 despite their advertisement.

The $4 silicone cover has practically paid for itself time and time again. One major fall was when I had the kindle leaned up against the interior car door, just for a second, and my friend unknowingly opened the door and out went my kindle onto the parking lot. No scratches, cracks, or damage. I just had to wipe off the sand/dirt that clung onto the silicone.

I also use a soft BodyGlove e-reader sleeve when in transport/storage which fits well with the silicone cover.

Is there a case or stretchy rubbery thing I could buy which will make my reading experiences less accident prone and painful, and more enjoyable?

I've never seen a Kindle leather cover in real life, but looking closely at some pictures, I don't see them helping very much. Perhaps they do?

Thanks in advance for any replies :-)
You answered your own question about "Am I the only one...." when you said you searched for other talk on the subject but didn't find any.

Yes, they make neoprene covers for Kindles that come in a variety of colors. I have two leather cases that are quite different but since I don't have the problems you do I can't say whether the cases would help or not.

I did get a good laugh at the "sharp thin bottom corners digging into the palms of my hands." An 8.5 ounce gizmo with rounded plastic corners digging into the palms of your hands? That's hilarious. Dramatic, though.

Here's a leather cover.

I don't find the Kindle that troublesome. I've always used this skin on it. If I had to change anything, I would move the page buttons inward a bit, but that's it.

By far my favourite case for my Kindle 3 is the Marware Eco Flip leather case. It's a flip-style case that has a wide elastic band on the back of the cover, so that when you have the cover open, you can slip your hand in. I find that I can position my hand just right, so that I can press the buttons with the thumb on my hand that is in the strap (does that make sense? LOL). I also like the the edges are partially protected too. It did smell a little strong when I first received it (I'm really sensitive to smell) but I found that the features far outweighed the bad smell, and it went away after awhile. I also like that it folds at the top, so that I can comfortably hold it with either hand. I'm also a little clumsy, and the strap feels more secure.

I like the hand-strap on the case so much, that any ereader I own will NEED a cover with a similar strap (or I will add one). I can't imagine reading nearly as comfortably without one.

Here's a link.
