I love the Kobo. Its pleasant to read on for long periods of time. I do notice that its slow, it keeps reminding me of the sub 500$ computer my mom bought and I had to maintain. Navigation is easy and smooth. Works well with Calibre.
I like the quilted back of the Kobo, makes holding easy. I still can't find a cover for it, very limited selection. I have checked out several cover threads but nothing so far.I need something on it, so I can put it in my backpack. I am finding that I would like the dictionary feature of the kindle. Its not something I cared about when I was looking. Now that I have been reading on an ereader, I would use it if I had one. The more I read, the more I think I would use it. Really depends on the book, but its making me think about switching the longer I read the Kobo. I know that books bought from Kobo have a dictionary, but isn't the same thing. Several of the books I want on the ereader are not available from Kobo or Borders. I found page turning awkward for the first day or so, but that seems to have gone away. As long as I hold it in my left hand its not a problem. I see why people end up returning one or two ereaders before they find the one they like. Its really something you have to use for a bit before you can figure out what you like and want in them. |

Well I have decided to return the Kobo this coming weekend or maybe next week. I was having problems getting books on and off today. I got it fixed, but I realize a few things
1. I really want a dictionary. 2. I enjoy using an ereader and its way more comfortable. I will probably use it for all my books, not just fiction. 3. I thought I would still buy some books, but I don't really see that happening. I like having everything right there at my finger tips. I am looking at the Kindle and the Sony 650 right now. I know I said the 650 was a bit to pricy and I still think that. It is well built, so I am thinking about spending the money on it. I am not interested in the pocketbook or cybook. I think the kindle has the better screen, I think it has more options for formating the text and good dictionary features. I can only compare the screen to a demo 950 modle at best buy. It looks a little beat up. I read a lot of books on history, which contain graphs, maps and maybe pictures. It looks like both would be fine, but is there anything I should be aware of? Which book would be better for these? Is there a contrast control, so that I can make the text darker on PRS 650? I had this problem on the Kobo. I know you can do it on the kindle, but I couldn't find it on the 950, which looked faint or not dark enough. I did read that you should be able to do that with pdf's but what about epubs? Which ereader would be better for searching a book for something inside a book? Say I need to find a historical account of something. Is there an advantage of one over the other. They look about the same. The kindle has the advantage for adjusting text size over the 650, but has anyone had an issue with the text sizes on the 650. I noticed a couple of spots, there was a huge step between some of the text sizes. How is the input/typing with the 650? Better to use fingers like an ipod or the stylus for taking notes. Can you export notes from either machine to your computer? I have a mac. |

You can adjust the font size on both the Sony and the Kindle although the Kindle has more options.
I know that you can search in a document in the Kindle very easily. Another option is to highlight a passage and add a note so that you can reference events pretty easily when you are out of the book. Or even bookmarking pages that you think are relevent. I know that the Kindle has a webpage you can go to and view all of your notes. You go to Kindle.amazon.com and you can look at all of your notes and highlights. At the very least, you can do a quick cut and paste from there. I am taking a look and I don't see an easy export option. The Kindle allows you to move to landscape mode very easily which makes it easier to look at graphs and pictures. The 650 is a very nice machine. You will not be disappointed if you get one. It does not offer anything that I think is so special that it is worth the extra money you have to pay for it. I know people discuss how well built it is but I have a K1 (traveled all over the US, Australia, and New Zealans. Spent time on planes, at the beach, in a backpack, and all over the house), DXG, and K3. The K1 is coming on three years old and works perfectly. No problems. So I don't buy that you need the extra protection that the Sony's metal casing provides. I am not a huge fan of touch screens so that is not a winner for me. I love my 3G/WiFi connectivity and I could not get that on the 650. |

I don't think I need wifi, but that may be like the dictionary, where I find I like it after the fact. The one reason people are for wifi is to look at wikipedia. I tend to do that with some of the books I read to fill in the background. I usually have my ipod with me, but not always. I have never heard anyone complain about the Kindle not being durable. I have heard nothing but good things about them from friends. People tend to think I am crazy for trying something different, but that is nothing new. ![]() |

First stop should be the Deals, Freebies and Resources forum. Make sure you check out the stickies at the top of that forum.

I have a kindle3 & a sony350. While I love my Sony & the touch screen, my hunch tells me you just might be happier with a Kindle. Let's face it, there is no perfect reader out there & the Kindle is a nice reader. I just find my Sony easier to use since I'm not keen on the keypad of the Kindle. Give the Kindle a try. You can always return it if you don't like it.
