To be honest with you and because I'm in the IT world, most electronic devices collect some information of you no matter what and you will have to be a real computer guru if you want to block it. The most typical example is browsing Internet. Your IP, the pages you visit, when you visit those, the type of browser you have, even the type of computer, everything is logged on external web servers and it is legal in most countries. That's how some sites can recommend you some type of merchandise real time or even send you emails with deals you like.

I would not be worried about Amazon, legally they cannot or should not delete your books from your Kindle. Either way, you have a backup of your ebook library, don't you???
thanks for the explanation jocampo - just to be clear, my main issue is not Amazon erasing my books, rather I hate amazon knowing how fast I read, what bookmarks I put, etc.

@captainralf: ok, done the little test. Adobereader makes a mess of the physics file, while pdfviewer is ok.
Search: adobeviewer took about 55 second (I was counting in my head ) to complete the search of the word "neuron": the words are visualised in the column, and if you tap on them you are sent to the relevant page.
In Pdfviewer the same search took less than three seconds (if that), and all words are shown highlighted already in the page.

Bear in mind, though, that there is still an important bug in pdfviewer, namely that in landscape mode you cannot move from the top part of the page to the bottom part - so for the time being we are stuck in portrait mode.

EDIT: below the internal pictures of the files - first the physics in Adobeviewer, then the same in pdf viewer. Next two pictures are search mode and corresponding page in Adobeviewer, and the following two same thing for pdfviewer. Final picture is one page in pdfviewer with minimal zoom - non very visible.

As for light, what I meant was that whatever light is fine for a paper book, is also fine for the PB903, at least for me.

Unless I have a malicious program on my computer, I do know and can decide how much information to share.
Besides that, the kindle is not off the table for me, I was hoping if you or somebody else owning a kindle DX has the time, he or she could share screenshots of the pdfs in post #14, so I can compare what's going on with what Paola provided.

SOOO much paola! This is really great and will help me for sure to make a better choice.

Does the landscape mode work in Adobereader?

That's good enough for me

EDIT:
@paola: I was just wondering in the second picture, the page title barely shows, is that an error in the screenshot or did it show like that?

Yes! Like some other readers, the pocketbooks have a sensor so that the page orientation turns as you turn the device.

I cannot remember, I will double check and let you know. At any rate, my device is running on the alpha version of the latest firmware, which is still experimental. The most stable version is 2.0.4, which won't give you note taking (well, only a basic function: you can select a portion of the text, which is saved as a note, and you can edit the note's title and add some text), but where there are no problems in moving between the top and bottom areas of the page you are zooming.

If you disable synchronization of bookmarks, highlights, etc., I don't think that the Kindle reports them, because there'd be no need to. I have it disabled, because my husband and I both read the same books on 2 Kindles, and we don't want the "last page read" or notes copied onto both Kindles.

Sorry, i wasn't clear enough. you mentioned that in the pdfviewer you can only see the first part of the page in landscape mode. Does it work properly in adobereader?

cheers and thanks for following up on the "garbled" title.

it was really generous of you to follow up on this. I am however a little reluctant to go for a pocketbook, as I might have issues reading my physics books...
maybe I should wait for the Onyx to be released and then order both and keep the one that's better.

Well, if you are ever in Germany Paola, I think you earned yourself a big old german beer or sth

Thanks everybody else for your suggestions as well! I might ask around the kindle subforum if somebody is willing to test out my files.

Cheers

if I were you, I would give myself another moth or so - the Onyx will be out, you'll get some user reviews, posibly also some comparisons, and in the meantime if Pocketbook want to compete they'll have to come up with a fully functioning software - the inability to switch between top and bottom part of a page in pdfviewer is a bug that should be easily fixed (it was not there in previous versions). But I wouldn't take the plunge on something of which you are not completely satisfied, or with lack of necessary capabilities for you.

oh, and be sure I'll remember to give you a shout next time I'm thirsty in Germany

everybody again for your advise!

I pre-ordered the Onyx with the option to return it within 7 days and it's supposed to ship around the 9th of June. They have postponed the date once already... so we'll see about that

When it arrives, I'll post a full report on how great or not it is!

cheers

I have come to know that ipad by apple can handle any format. So you may consider that. Good luck!

The formulas in physics.pdf got mixed up in KDXG.

P.S.: was just playing with v3.2.1 on KDXG.
I would consider KDXG for scientific papers only if you're ready to install the Duokan firmware.

it does look really really impressive - have you already set a price for it (I couldn't find it on your webpage)?
