Well, there are plenty of pornographic and near pornographic books (E and otherwise) on Amazon. It would be interesting to see if gay themed books that aren't pornographic are removed.

If more mainstream gay themed books remain and straight themed pornography remains, then can we conclude that the combination of gay and pornographic is the trigger?

If so, then I think it's unfair. If they also pull the sleazier straight oriented books, then that seems OK to me. (and I think they DO need to clean up their act a bit all the way around)

But ultimately, all merchants have a right to determine what they sell. The only stick the gay community has in this instance would seem to be economic. If they don't like what Amazon is doing, then they should start swinging that stick!

If/When Apple does something similar... IT'S MAGICAL! I CAN'T BELIEVE NOBODY ELSE DID THIS BEFORE!

One persons porn, is another persons entertainment, so long as no one is forcing you to buy it, why the hell do you care?

So long as it is not ending up in minors hands (parents need to actually be parents & monitor their children) no harm no foul.

The vast majority of people will not tolerate your (ps249, sunnysmiles) form of censorship.

Two quotes:
Censorship ends in logical completeness when nobody is allowed to read any books except the books that nobody reads.
George Bernard Shaw

There is a fine line between censorship and good taste and moral responsibility.
Steven Spielberg

Manga is hard to read on the Kindle (IMO) anyway, but censorship is a very slippery slope to set foot upon. First you ban this, then that, and before you know it you have very empty bookshelves where before you had too little space and too many books.

At times like these, Bezos and Jobs remind me of Herr Starr from the Preacher comics:

'Hand picked by the upper echelons of The Grail, Herr Starr is the sacred executioner. Over his twenty five year service to The Grail, he has used his cunning and intellect to become Allfather himself, though his rise to power has cost him several body parts, including his genitalia.'

Maybe I'm wrong, but aren't businesses allowed to determine what products they will carry and what audiences they will target?

I also think it's wrong to say "Amazon IS doing this" when we don't know if it is corporate policy or the work of a relatively few members of it's staff.

Sure, but if you hold one group to a different standard than another, i.e. you remove gay material but not similar straight material then it's discrimination. Even if it's legal, it's still discriminatory. If Amazon were to suddenly drop all Christian or Jewish materials, while keeping Muslim and Hindu books, they'd be within their legal right to do so, but it'd still be wrong.

It's both.

They reserve the right to pretty much pull what they want, when they want, for any reason whatsoever. There is no requirement for them to apply this consistently. In most cases, they'll pull it in response to customer complaints.

This is quite accurate, but...
... this doesn't give you a full indication of just how pornographic manga can be! Imagine comic books that covers EVERY fetish imaginable.

There is so much pornographic content in manga. The majority of porn manga deal with bondage and rape, both gay and straight. B&D is a popular theme in Japan. If you look at the manga rack in a 7-Eleven, you find an entire section with the manga tied up to prevent 'looking.' And this is in a convenience store! Imagine how many different ones get sold in the Adult book stores!

Oh, please.

If they pulled every single work of gay erotica, then you'd have a valid claim. When they pull 10 books (which may include graphic depictions of underaged sex) out of about 1,000,000 ebook titles, it's nothing. Especially since they offer domestic partner benefits.

Just curious, do BN, Sony, and Kobo books sell this title? I have done no research on this subject so I have no idea if they do or do not.

If they do, then good for them. It also gives the people who want to read the disputed titles a mainstream vendor to buy them from.

If they don't then maybe the discussion should be why aren't all of the major stores selling these titles. And while it is not a good thing, in my opinion, that Amazon pulled them there seems to be an industry standard that these are not something that companies want to sell.

As a business they get to make that decision. I would prefer that they sell the titles and let people chose to buy them or not but it is still their choice to do so or not.

I believe I read that the publisher said they get as many sales from B&N as from Amazon, though I don't know the dropped titles are available there or not.

Cool. Then good for BN. I think that they are legitimate items for sale and would prefer Amazon carry them.
