We have a small Radio Shack. Mall, forget about it. Gotta drive for an hour and fifteen minutes to get to the mall and Barnes & Noble. The good bit is if we do make the trip, Target and Best Buy and Petsmart are all right near the mall.

We do have a movie theater.. that's actually kind of fun, because we often come very close to getting "private showings". Not at all unusual to go to the movies and have only a few other people in the theater if you pick the right night.

I do know people in town have readers, the funny thing was when the library had a "reader play day", the Nook owners actually outnumbered the Kindle owners. Maybe that's where the Wal-Mart stock disappeared to over Christmas...

Wow, you should move to a big city. Here (Seattle metro area), you can start at the southern end, drive north for an hour and 15 minutes, and still be in the metro area. It's nothing but a solid "city" from one end to the other; loaded with countless chain stores and malls.

believe it or not there are people who actually choose to not live in that environment

That would be a close approximation to "hell" for me . I like living in the countryside.

A half hour drive to the east of I-5 easily puts you in the countryside.

Tesco, who are the largest chain of British supermarkets, have been selling the Kindle for a while now in their larger stores. My local shop doesn't sell it, but a larger one in a nearby town, about 5 miles away, does.

My local Wal-Mart sells ereaders. The Sony and Nook if I recall, but I haven't seen any Kindles on display yet. We have a super center Wal-Mart store here, a radio shack, theater and have a pop. of around 10K according to last census. We even have a video rental store (though Family Video closed up shop along with the rest of the franchise's another video store opened on the same site a month or so later.) There have been times at the theater that I have been almost (if not ) the only patron at a movie showing. I don't know if the movie was unpopular here, had already been seen by most or what, but when I went to see U-571 the screening room was almost deserted. Not sure if the local library is currently offering ebooks (though they do offer loans on readers). Would be interesting if my local Wal-Mart did display kindles though.

Betting housing prices are lots steeper in Seattle than where I live though! And more traffic too.

Though I admit, Seattle Library has more ebook titles than my library. But my library isn't bad for selection even if the only way they can offer ebooks is to be part of a consortium.

Actually, I came from a major metropolitan area (Bay Area, CA) to small town life as did hubby. While shopping isn't great, that's what the internet is for. Otherwise, we've found it to be pretty enjoyable.

I love Wash and Oregon, but there's no way I'd ever live on the east side of the Cascades. I gotta have both mountains and ocean nearby.

+1
Some of us feel the optimum size for a modern human habitat is in the 100-200k range; big enough to support an airport and at least one big mall and a couple dozen strip malls. I recently moved back to one such. (Not that it was a factor in the move but I do have both ocean and mountains in view ) Fifteen minutes on the espressway takes you from one end of the metro area to the other. No shortage of shopping, stadium cineplexes, broadband or restaurants. No miles long traffic jams either.

Only thing lacking is a Borders. But that's no longer a consideration.

I like Seattle, but that description sure doesn't make it sound very appealing!

you have to understand that Seattle is VERY long and narrow. it is, for all intentions, city from north of Everett to well south of Tacoma, there is a little blip of *ahhh* then you are in Olympia. however, go 15-20 minutes east and you can be in the country, or hop a boat and you can be pretty rural like I am

Yep .

And a half hour drive west brings you bact to megalocolypse.

But, what was walmart thinking? That their shoppers actually read?

Nearest traffic light is 30 minutes. Nearest Tim Horton's is an hour. No WalMart AT ALL. It takes a ferry to get here (or float plane). And I don't live on an island. But bank, IGA, drugstore, butcher, bookstore, hardware/home center, and medical/dental all within 5 minutes. In a town of less than 1k in the winter.

Yes, it IS Paradise.
