Actually no, it's not a dumb blonde act....she has her good points, but yeah....in everyday life...do you really NEED to know what county the capital of Budapest is of? You SHOULD know that Europe is a freakin' continent though LOL.

She's good eye candy, even if I don't like country music.

A certain percentage, I think it was 5%, of high-school students could not find the United States on a map. I'm assuming that's that same group that doesn't know what a map is.

I was about to say that Europe isn't a continent - then I looked it up Well, what do you know. I do prefer the definition of Europe as part of the Eurasian continent though.

One semester I had two hundred plus students so I assigned three students to each country. The three students who were assigned to Great Britain told me that Germany bordered Great Britain. Then they argued with me when I returned their paper and they had been marked down. I pulled out a map and they still argued with me.

It is really, really sad what students don't know.

And most thought that Africa was one country and did not get the difference between a continent and a country.

I drank heavily after grading.

What I learned at primary school some 30 years ago. Europe is not a "standalone" continent; it belongs to Eurasia.

So, I for one regard Eurasia as a continent, the way I was taught in my school far northwest on the Scandinavian peninsula.

It's the fact that the Bosphorus completely separates Europe from Asia that makes it conventional to regard them as two separate continents:

Uh? What about Russia? Geographically the separation of Europe and Asia is the Ural mountain range - but it's still connected by land as far as I can see...

Damn - forgot about Russia . Yes, you're right, of course. But the Bosphorus certainly forms a portion of the boundary between Europe and Asia.

Obviously my geography is nearly as bad as that of Ms. Pickler .

The Bosphorus strait is a famous boundary between Europe and Asia.

Well, Europe is completely attached to Asia through Scandinavia.
There is no bridge or ferry between Norway and Russia over Svanvik - Boris-Gleb (which I have personally crossed by car). Neither are there any ferries or bridges between the very most part of Finland and Russia (where I also have crossed by car, several times (Raja-Jooseppi - Lotta)).
And you can still drive North-East-West-South of Europe (as a part of the world) without having to "jump" between any continent.
Starting in Norway at Nordkapp and ending in Tarifa in Spain
(Norway(Nordkapp)-Finland-Russia-Ukraine(Chertkovo)-Slovenia-Austria-Switzerland-France-Spain-Portugal(Cabo da Roca)-Spain(Tarifa).
(Which I plan on doing "some time" on motorcycle. )

So, Europe is landfast with Asia, hence Eurasia.

I thought that the continents were defined by the tectonic plates that they were on and that there were cases of land borders that crossed multiple plates. So the continent of Europe is on a different plate then the continent of Asia.

I have always thought of the Ural Mountains as that border for the continents of Europe and Asia but I am used to looking for the mountain ranges, because those are formed due to the pressure of two plates colliding, and earthquake prone areas, subduction zones where one plate is being pushed under the other and consumed increasing the likelihood of earthquakes, as plate markers.
