Yes, and I thought at one time they said the K3's functionality was going to come to the DXg, but it looks like that's not going to happen.

By the way, if you are looking for a tablet in order to read or use PDFs, take a look on iPad+GoodReader. I tried RepliGo on my Galaxy Tab, but GoodReader is just amazing!
Thanks, I'll check into it, but for various reasons I'm pretty sure I'll be getting an Android tablet and the upcoming 10.1 Tb is at the top of my list right now.

I don't think amazon ever said that; there's been a lot of wishful thinking on the part of some.
We don't have to wish much longer since yifanlu has already successfully ported 3.1 to the DXG/K2:

That could be, I just thought I remembered something from when the K3 first came out, but that was a while ago and not having a DXg I wasn't paying that much attention.

Yeah, you probably heard the wishful thinking. You can find a lot of that, along with general freaking out, over the lack of wanted firmware upgrades on many of the DXG related threads here.

sorry for going OT.

Ok...I'm kind of reconsidering the DXG since there are people advising against it.

First off, I wanted to get the kindle instead of an ipad or another tablet thing, because I would only want to use it for reading pdfs especially of mangas and comic books. (This is why I want the DXG instead of the regular kindle 3 because of the large screen).

Also I have heard that reading on the kindle is much easier on the eyes than on the computer, and since I want to read my pdfs for at least an hour or so without straining my eyes, I don't think the ipad will help that right? (please correct me if I'm wrong). That's one of the biggest issues. If I want to read on an LED screen, I might as well read off my laptop, which is the reason I would get a kindle.

So for this I was just hoping to get the dxg for my manga and black and white books until the new kindle comes out.

For those of you who are saying I shouldn't buy a dxg because the lack of pdf support, what are some specific issues that I might have with the dxg that the kindle 3 or the ipad fixes?

The biggest problem with PDFs on both the Kindle 3 and the Kindle DX is the lack of support for any form of reflow. There's also a significant problem in that hyperlinks aren't supported, so things like tables of contents can't be used.

I have both a Kindle and an iPad; the iPad is the clear winner for reading PDFs.

Just to clarify: PDF lacks reflow support for a reason, it its not due to any limitation of the Kindle. A PDF is prepared with the expressed purpose of looking the same (well, more or less), no matter which device (or paper) you're reading it from.

Of course it's a limitation of the Kindle. I'm not aware of any other reading device which doesn't support PDF reflow. Ideally of course one would want to view a PDF document at it's original size, but when this isn't feasible, reflowing the document is a much better solution than the "zoom and scroll" method which is all the Kindle offers.

I stand corrected.

For more details on PDF reflow, check out the community wiki.

In case no one else has mentioned it, Duokan greatly improves pdf reading on the KDX. Duokan is free and works, and even has comic book mode.

From what I remember, someone posted that they had talked to someone at Amazon who told them that the DXG would be getting the same software as the K3. It's too bad that that never panned out.
