Just FYI on this situation:

I got through to the Kobo tech support people. They were very nice as they walked me through a couple more factory-reset attempts, to no avail. Happily, they offered to replace the device with a new one.

I am hopeful that ereader #2 lasts a bit longer.

Have you tried using an SD card instead of main memory?
