It is the case that every Kindle (and Kindle app) ever shipped has supported the DRM variation needed for library borrowing (essentially it is the same as Mobipocket DRM). As many posts here on Mobileread will attest.
The technical issues have always been on the server side, not the client side. Kindle platform still needs a device ID to apply DRM, but it is not exposed to the user as it is with Mobipocket platform. Therefore, before you can download an ebook 'from the library' (really it will be from an Amazon server somewhere), you will need to login with your Amazon credentials, and select the device you want to prepare ebook bits for, with wireless delivery included if desired. Neither your library or Overdrive has information about your Amazon account or Kindle devices, and you would not want them to have it. My conclusion is that there won't be any firmware updates needed. They have been planning for this since the very beginning of Kindle. |

Anyone tried jailbreaking? If that works, I would love to get a copy of the rootfs image to analyze.

How about the screensaver hack? That's the one that interests me as I got an ad supported Kindle with 3.2 as a gift.

I avoid the screensavers on my KSO. When I'm done reading, I close the cover and slide the power switch off. When I'm ready to read again, I slide the switch on and then open the cover. By doing it in this sequence, I never see the screensavers. A simple method that doesn't require hacking.

I can confirm that other models of the Kindle are coming with Firmware 3.2. My buddy just bought a wifi version (B008, not Special Offers version) and it has firmware 3.2.
