why do many apps only work with SD card installed?

I think this is a relic of Android being a phone OS first. Most phones have pretty limited internal storage and filling it up can cause issues, so the programs were made to use the sdcard.

I don't doubt what you are saying at all. If this is the case, of course, it would mean that we'd have to wait till the Nook gets a higher or different version of Android before this was fixed.

Actually, I do not think that the OS prevents an app from seeing the internal media storage memory. After all, the B&N apps can see and use the internal media storage. But apps that were not specifically developed for the Nook are probably not set up to see any media storage except SD cards, since that is how the Android smartphones are set up. I think that when apps are ported to a tablet OS like Android 3.0 then other media storage options will have to be coded into the apps. If B&N wants current apps to use Nook's internal media storage, then I think they will need to convince developer's to add code to access Nook's internal media storage. That is just my opinion of course.

I see. I misunderstood what you meant. So it seems that it is just a matter of getting the developers to fix their apps. This is better than having the OS be at fault for sure.
