And the romance is a fairly low-key element as the books really do focus first and foremost on the supernatural investigations (although the relationship drama is a major part of the overall series plot, but backburnered relative to the rest).

Well, Swordspoint is definitely worth the $8*, although I'd personally class Fall as a $5 or less e-book. It's an okay read, but just not even remotely in the same league, unfortunately.

Perhaps you could use part of your Amazon credit towards it? Although there might be other books you'd prefer to put your money towards until the *ouch* of the sudden pricejump goes away.

* I personally own 3 paper copies in French and English (old version & new version with extra stuff in the back), plus the English e-book, for what it's worth.
looked it up and the Blood and Smoke series sounds interesting

oh, the amazon credit can't be used for agency books~

i may be tempted to eventually get it at the new prices though, as i really do want to read it.

Oh, just wait until you read The Fae Scene in Wise Man's Fear. I can't remember the last time I skimmed like that. (I don't think that's a spoiler... I mean you already know about Bast from the first pages of the first book, right?)

That's a misunderstanding of the editor's role and power. An editor can only suggest; the author has to be willing to accept.

I have had authors tell me that I am to only make sure there is punctuation at the end of every sentence and no other suggestions or corrections are wanted or will be accepted.

That certainly applies to the follow-up books--and even more-so now that Rothfuss has become a "bestseller." But strictly speaking of a debut novel/novelist like Name of the Wind/Rothfuss was, the publisher assigned editor surely has a bit more of a club to wield over a scared newbie who's trying to break through. The point may be moot now, but I still say that a more aggressive editor could have helped this debut author (at the time) tighten things up a bit.

Ironically enough, I've been led to believe in this particular instance that it was Rothfuss's editor who encouraged him to lengthen and expand on certain sections. If true, he certainly seemed willing enough to accept her suggestions.

Ah well, point taken in any case.

I wouldn't necessarily take you up on every suggestion, but I certainly wouldn't ask you not to offer them. At that stage, I'd be wanting feedback feedback feedback.
