No, wrong way round, that's how it works now... should be for every ebook you buy - go plant a tree because no-one else will...

Thus you prove you love the nature by a deed not just by a big mouth
Brilliant idea!

TBH I thought that Waterstones was Adobe and that I would be able to get it to my kindle reasonably easily, without having to break any laws, apparently not.
I am happy that I have paid for my book, I'm not at all into pirating anything and I'm sure that I would infest my pc with all sorts of nasties if I tried.
I just want to put the book that I paid for onto MY kindle and think that if we are to take over the world with ebooks and save all the trees than these things should be a little interchangeable.
Like I say, I'm a noob, and I will look more carefully in the future.
Anyhow, thanks again.
Yes, Waterstones sells in the Adobe ADEPT DRM'ed ePub format, which is the format supported by the greatest number of devices. Problem is, that Amazon only supports their propietary format for the most part. They also will not let other companies support the Kindle/Mobi format unless they do not support the Adobe version of ePub (or any other format with DRM). Blame Amazon on this one. They want you to only buy from them, even if they happen to not have what you want.

If you do have a DRM free book (whether released with out DRM, or the DRM was removed), Calibre works great for converting between formats. Yes, you can sometimes buy books without DRM. On Amazon, if you see that it says that it allows for unlimited simultanious device usage, it is DRM free and can be converted to any other format without problems (or just copied to another machine that supports Kindle books). All books from Smashwords or O'Reilly are DRM free as well, same with books available from here at Mobileread. If it says it is Adobe ePub, or a Kindle book with a limit on the number of devices it can be used on simultaniously, then it has DRM.

I should also mention that just because it says it is in ePub format, that does not mean it has DRM. Only ones that mention Adobe have it. Adobe simply bolted on a DRM system onto an existing, open, format.

To the OP. Go to the Kindle Forum. I believe you will find a thread or two on how to buy books from Amazon US without being a US citizen or living in the US.
