The employees of Canada Post are in a union, but they do not work for the union, the distinction is huge.

I agree, no essential services should have the ability to strike, Police, Fire, Hospitals, Postal etc, should be compelled to work during arbitration or contract disputes.

I am not my work. I want to do things because I choose to do them, not because I have to.

To quote Mark Twain - "Work is what a body is obliged to do, play is what a body is not obliged to do."

What I find so interesting nowadays is the media drumbeat of "work, work, work" to older people. Not "take the time and explore your abilities", or "go and see the world". Just "keep working til you drop, after all, you have nothing better to do."

Do you exist just to be a production unit, (with most of your value going to pay a bunch of senior managers to live like they were in the Arabian Nights)?

If you do, feel free to work 'til you drop. I have broader horizons.

The most appalling thing I've heard lately (not just in reference to oldsters) is referring to employees as "resources!"

i guess it's a way of dehumanizing them and in a way, make it easier for employers to make tough business decisions. it's funny how man's worst enemy is himself. we don't need an alien invasion to wipe out the human race or any other environmental disaster. given enough time, we can do it by ourselves
