I definitely recognize this; I get a whole lot more entertainment per buck when I buy 20 used books at 50 cent each than out of one 10 buck agency book. Even if 80% of those 20 used books turn out to be bad/boring etc.

The only hard-covers I've read the last couple of years have been presents by my wife, who know which writers I like and read and quite correctly assumes I won't have read books that are available in hard-cover only

Another convert to ebooks from used paperbacks and hardcovers. Almost never purchased a new hardcover.

So publishers and authors made very little off of me. But with ebooks, they are now getting the money from me instead of the used book stores getting is.

Or at least the authors and publishers who "get' ebook pricing are getting paid from me. The rest are being ignored until they change their pricing.

I'm in the same boat. Before my e-reader, I read less, and I either (1) borrowed books from the library (2) borrowed from friends (3) bought used paperbacks. Last hardcover I bought I think was in 2001 for Tad William's Sea of Silverlight.

Ever since I bought my e-reader back in 2010, I've been spending $10-$25/month on ebooks. Ebooks are bringing $$$ in to where there weren't a lot of purchases before. I'm also in the fortunate position now of having access to all sorts of great indie speculative fiction (book blogging is awesome), but I suspect that I'll still spend that amount of money anyway just because I find the Kindle very hard to detach from my hand, and the device needs to be fed.

I'm another one who never purchased hardcovers. However, I didn't really do too much second-hand purchasing. My cheap purchases were occasional bargain bin offerings at the bookstore, but most of my purchases were full price paperbacks (at Australian prices ).

I didn't necessarily dislike hardcovers for the price though. I disliked them (rather intensely) because I found them a pain in the rear end to read. Also I didn't like the whole dust jacket idea. If I left it on it would be very easily damaged and if I took it off I lost my nice cover image to look at. I guess I just didn't understand hardcovers that much.

Regards
Caleb

minus the Australian prices (of course), and the fact that along with being uncomfortable to read (especially with a dust jacket), I do find hardcovers to be too expensive, for my budget.

Actually, as long as I get a full length novel for $10.00 or less, I pretty much assess all books on the basis of how much I find the premise interesting and whether the sample was good.

If my spidey senses get all tingly telling me of the quality of the book beyond the sample, it's very hard not to purchase it. But that also depends on whether it's available in the library or not. If it's not, and I'm in the mood for the book, there's an 80% and upwards chance of me purchasing the book so long as it's less than 10 bucks.

I don't ever buy books before reading the sample, and there's a lot of samples I keep on a separate Kindle Collection where I hem and haw over them if they're really worth that price. Those are the ones priced over $10. They sit in that collection for months and eventually I delete them if they sit there too long.
