I found that I needed to increase my reading lights by about 25 watts to be as comfortable reading my kindle as I was reading a book. So you probably do just need more light.

Well.. I have found that the grey background while slightly offsetting seems to work well to reduce eye fatigue. I note I can read longer on the kindle than I could on a paper back. Maybe it is just a placebo effect.
That being said after playing with the nook I am surprised anyone feels the pearl screen is superior as the nooks screen is much nicer background wise and the text is very dark.
