"Backlist" means the older titles that a publisher owns. Think of DVDs-- you have the new and recent releases being sold for $12 - $15 or so, and then you have older (but not public domain) movies sold from a heaping bin for $5 each (or maybe 2 for $5.) With books, publishers seem to think that they can charge new release prices for the ebooks that should be in the bargain bin. IMHO, no ebook of a title more than 20 years or so old (just to pick a round number) should cost more than around 3 bucks.
