would love to see you twist a 9"x12" (or whatever is need for a DX) plate of cast aluminum at 1/8" or 1/4" thick. weighs next to nothing and can handle the torquing and pressure forces in carry bag. an elephant stomp no a .22 maybe.

Lots of good advice here! The thing is I'm very careful with my bag and I endlessly worry about my kindle because of the previous broken ones. I don't understand how it's happening, it's inside a case and there's no damage to the screen but the inside e-ink layer seems damaged.

I should try to take photos, show you what I mean. I kept my K2 in the same bag in (effectively) the same case and never had a moment's problem. The kindle is basically at the front of my bag and I'm careful never to bang it into anything. At first I just assumed I was unlucky and had two that broke in a row but after it happened the third time I realized it's me.

I'll look at all the case options and once I replace it I'll put it even further inside my bag and wrap it in my gym clothes. I'm going to call amazon support like they requested first and they may even offer to replace it. They've been _amazing_ every time I called and replaced it even when I didn't deserve it in any way.

They've sure got brand loyalty with me now. I have amazon prime now and I'll be buying each new kindle they release on launch without hesitation!

Again, it's probably an issue with applying some force to the screen, even through the case or more likely a twisting or torsional force. Say you take your kindle with one hand grabbing the top and the other hand grabbing the bottom, even in the case, and turn your hands in opposite directions like wringing out wet laundry. Those forces can probably crack the internals of the screen.

So, adding a "shutter" of thicker aluminum or similar material to which attach the kindle or just make sure they remain together, should help. I don't know how much force at the back would break it.

I certainly empathize with the original poster - I've also 'broken' 3 kindle screens so far and don't know who to blame more: kindle (or the e-ink screen manufacturer for making these things so fragile), myself (as I clearly must be doing sthg wrong as well, even though I really TRY to be careful) or the cover manufacturers for not being able to provide a genuinely sturdy cover that can stand at least SOME torque. I have to say that Amazon has been amazing so far in replacing the ones that were under warranty.

It DOES seem to me that is a hole in the market. But so has nobody found ANOTHER (NON-DIY, NON-Kindle-specific) solution for this? Because I'd basically go for ANY type of light-weight, genuinely sturdy (is aluminum the best for this?) box in which I can put the kindle when I travel.

Klear Kase is suppose to be light weight and very strong. It is made from the stuff used to make the windows on fighter planes.

The problem is more likely then not a twisting motion that is breaking the screen. Cases do a good job of preventing the drop on a screen breakage but if an e-reader is in a backpack and ends up somehow being twisted, turn a certain way and the device gets stuck between a couple of books and is twisted as they move with the body. Backpack is not gently placed down in the car set. That type of thing and the screen can break.

The key is to not put you case protected Kindle next to other items that are heavier and might lead to a twisting type pressure depending on the bag you are using and how it gets bumped. My Kindles have always gone in my under the seat carry on, a purse or smaller bag, that contains a netbook (now IPad), snacks, my Kindle, keys, wallet, and IPod. My backpack that carries other stuff that I want with me, just in case, and is heavier, goes above in the over head. I am able to prevent the Kindle from getting whapped around in a bag with heavier objects and reducing the risk of screen breakage.

I took a look at the KlearKase, but it doesn't seem to exist for the latest kindle (Wi-Fi, 6" E Ink Display, no keyboard). I guess polycarbonate should indeed do the trick. But still - can anybody confirm that that does NOT bend at all? Also, I am not really planning on doing any underwater kindle-reading, and that's what they mostly seem to advertize for
