Since getting the reader I joined two more libraries to check out ebooks. One is the Singapore Library, which is for free, to read English books, the other one is a German library that has a bigger ebook selection than the one in Berlin.

I haven't picked up a pbook ever since.

The main reason I stopped going to the library is that there is none where it's convenient to go (ie, somewhere on the home / work trip, or close to work).

And to library ebooks, they a non-existent in france.

Although I was still a member of my local library, I'd not actually used more than once a year.

I like the library service, I like to know that its there, and here in the UK, I like the fact that its a 'service hub' (carries a whole range of local information and services).

It's only the pressure of work that limits the time I had to go to the library. Now that I can borrow on-line, I'm there at least once a week. Looking at the recent releases and returns.

I don't have much experience with libraries but I always thought that when you borrow a printed book, you have to return it let's say for argument sake in 21 days. If you have not finished it by the end of that time period, you just went to the library a few days before the end day and renewed the time lease. One limitation is you cannot renew it for more than 2 consequent times.

Cannot you prolong the time lease with ebooks?

I've not visited a library in ages and once I started reading electronically there was even less reason to go.

I answered the 3d group as if my local library would actually have electronic books: if they had them, and I could borrow them from my computer at home (so, no need to go to town to put a few books on my reader), I would read any fiction book I would like to read (assuming they really would have a good selection, which won't happen in another dozen years, if I must believe our publishers).

I was a pretty regular library book user: my daughter and I would go about once a month. Then my local library closed for renovations for 2 years. I got an ereader just for this reason: I missed library books and I couldn't make another branch work out (too far). They have a large ebook collection. Now I love ebook lending so much, I'm not sure I will use the library much after it reopens.

astra: the terms of ebook lending are nearly the same as pbook lending. There are no ebook renewals, but if no one has it on hold, you can check it out again right away. At my library, you can't renew a book if someone has it on hold, so that's pretty much the same.

Ta.
Quite possible the same here.

It means using libraries is not an option. I read thick books, 800+. I need more than 3 weeks to read one. When 100 pages left I have to return it and wait for another 3-4 months?? No way.

However, there is one point I don't understand at all.
There is a limited number of physical books

File???? 1.000.000 people can borrow it indefinitely. What queues are we talking about

I should add, I enjoy browsing shelves of books both electronically and real life. I enjoy my IRL trips to the library; I also enjoy bringing my children along and helping them select books (as they haven't got e-readers yet, anyway).

Ebooks have only changed what I borrow from libraries. Before I would peruse the SF/F section and take home a few books, and usually hit up the New Arrivals section too. Now my library usage is one of the following: 1. Cookbooks, 2. Crafting books (knit, crochet), 3. non-fiction pseudo-psychology or parenting books (eg - Reality is Broken, Nurtureshock), 4. children's books (much as I love Dr. Seuss and Harold and his crayon, I need some variety)

I was a regular library user before my Kindle, and now I'm still a regular library user. The difference is, I almost never borrow dead tree books any more. I pretty much only borrow eBooks. Probably the single biggest wish I have is for eBook versions of books that aren't readily available any more.

One thing--I have found there could be 30 people on the wait list for an e-book at the library but the hardback is on the shelf! It is the book I want to read, although I prefer e-format I will read either.

It's for a shared license (the e-book license). This actually happens all the time and not only in the library. Sometimes we have to ask people to log off of a program they left running but are no longer using so someone else can use it at work.

Why impose an artificial limitation on reading books

What sort of world do we live in?
