Two factors I can think of: pages of a paper book freezing together (and anyway it's hard to turn pages wearing gloves or mittens); and ereaders may work better in Alaska, you know better conductivity etc (or is that just trolls in the Discworld?).

I'd love to see the figures for Siberia - seeing as it's at least as cold, if not colder, more isolated, has even less to do, and probably beats Alaska for alchohol consumption per head ! Oh, and nicotine addiction..............

I come late to this thread, and I have read it all, and I am still puzzled... What happens to an ebook when it is "consumed"? Do the bits vanish, or are they all inverted, or zeroed, or what?
Is this a variation of KKR's produce model of book production? I can't find the part where she describes it, but briefly, books spoil when they are left on the shelf too long; they must be constantly replaced by newer books. Last edited by pholy; 03-31-2011 at 10:39 AM. Reason: Typed too fast |

having actually lived in Alaska, Utah, Wyoming, AND Virginia, I know a crucial part of the first three is availability of B&M stores. I haven't a clue as to why it would be so high in Virginia.

I think Virginia is for opposite reason. Busy educated people who don't have time to visit book stores and always have the latest in gadgetry. I would love to see a mapped demographic for that one. I would guess that it would be condensed around the DC area.

But Alaska is on the other side of the US, and got mostly a cold climate, which Europe doesn't have, mostly thanks to the warm Gulfstream in the Atlantic. And I think that's also why electronic stuff might be more handy than having to go out in the dark (which we also have) but also in the icy colds (which we usually don't have). I bet the majority of people of Siberia aren't as advanced as the people of alaska, technology wise |

The thing about Virginia is that most of the people that do well there do VERY well and live in close proximity to each other. The population that isn't so well off, are spread out mostly in the western part of the state. Are you thinking of W. Virgina perhaps? I'm thinking of areas surrounding Alexandria, Arlington Co. and similar. If you have ever driven through VA on 95 during rush hour, you become well aware of how well off it is. Unfortunately, every time I have driven through it from NJ, I seem to time it perfectly so that I hit rush hour and taken on an addition 2.5 hours. Seems like I just wouldn't learn.
