There's no way a normal installation of Calibre can do this, there are no relevant settings, either. You mentioned plugins, though, which ones do you have installed in addition to the ones that ship with Calibre? And while we're on the topic, what version of Calibre are we talking about?

Sorry..I meant right side which shows the TOC in Sigil 4. I did resolve the issue which included a bit of user error I'm embarrassed to say. I'm certainly glad Calibre was not the issue since its such a marvelous tool.
Thanks to those who tried to help.

OK...have a laugh...
I started to use Sigil 4. I decided to install it on my SSD array. Previously Sigil was on another drive. The version Calibre pointed to was the earlier version. When I opened the files not added to Calibre I would drag them to the desktop icon...which of course was Sigil 4. Why the chapters didn't show in Sigil3.4 TOC Editor I can't say but my problems seem to be taken care of.

Thanks for sharing the reason. You won't hear any laughter from me, I'm sure I've done worse.

The funny thing is we all know why the chapters didn't show in Sigil3.4 TOC Editor, theducks explained it in post 10. The next time you have a Sigil problem the forum is one forum further down on the Mobileread forums page.

That would probably be because that version of Sigil tries to rebuild the TOC from h tags. Depending on how chapters are marked in the ePub, that might not work.

FYI Sigil 4 Beta has a second window that Is an 'Active TOC' (you can even navigate the chapters) that replaced the older (<v4) TOC Editor
The reason I stopped using the beta, is because of 'split' (mis-)ordering issues (split, merge and S&R in CV are my most heavily used features )

I know it's a bit off-topic, but this thread is nearly finished anyway - When you merge, do you worry about the size of the merged components? I know Calibre splits at a maximum size, but I've never run into a problem on my readers with files that are too large.

I don't worry about it because I am always merging for the purposes of re-splitting into chapters and just "assume" they will be small enough when done. Besides, not sure a Kindle has the page size problem anyway, isn't it only certain devices that do?

What I *do* worry about is double checking that Sigil hasn't thrown away the text instead of merging it. I have had that happen a couple of times - once after about an hour of s&r/editing operations where I hadn't clicked save first

(I am not running the latest Sigil, and yes this is heading OT in the wrong forum, sorry).

I split, then Merge a fragment (usually caused by not having a clean 'chapter' for Calibre to break on).
And Yes, I worry about size. (I requested size info/warnings),
Valloric is a 'purist'. Size is NOT in the EPUB spec

But since I split on Chapter boundries, I have yet to see a problem size.

Thanks for the comments. I also split on chapters and merge fragments, but I've never been sure if I'll later see a problem doing that.

You can always use the 'T' feature of Calibre Library and look at the component pieces, and 'cancel' the Tweak-EPUB session
