There are two reasons to upgrade. For features you know you need, and for features you don't know you need. You said you don't need to upgrade for the first reason. Waiting until the next major upgrade is reasonable timing to meet the second need.

If you don't download 'News' then you don't need the updated recipes

For one, Kiwidude's plugins (many have needed support added to Calibre base code) make an excellent reason to update.

You don't need to update Calibre to get updated recipes. Calibre's design checks to see if a recipe has been updated before it's used. If there's a new version, it gets automatically retrieved and used, regardless of your Calibre version.

(Well, actually, there is a version check on the recipe retrieval system. A recipe that needs specific new features in Calibre can be set to make sure an older version of Calibre doesn't try to use a new feature not found in the older Calibre, but that override seldom kicks in.)

Most(All) of the plugins are about to be re-released for 0.7.53 because of support improvements for plugins in calibre.

My workhorse is 'Open With'
I have set Sigil for edits, Paintshop Pro (Gimp on the Linux side) to edit existing covers. I barely scrape the power of the Kiwidude flood
