Trouble is, even when it is released, it's going to be many years before all (or even most) readers use it. I'm afraid it's best to go for the "lowest common denominator" if you want people to actually be able to read your book. Of course, if it's just for your own personal use, that's a different situation.

I suppose you could use <em>...</em> for the first one. But for longer-term usefulness, mark up italics for meaning rather than typographically.
