I rooted mine within hours of buying it. Great tablet as-is. B&N had done a great job (IMO) of dealing with the nook classic and nook color. Solid build, quality products. I'd rather them take their time (not too much time though) and get it right and maintain that quality. There are already too many Android tablet makers who rush things out in half-baked status.

so how would hsn peeps get it first? special serial numbers? preloaded and the download for the rest doesn't come out til after shipping? if an hsn member finds out an non hsn member got it before the will there be a class action suit?

and how do they get away with falsely stating the retail value at twice the real value - including a 2GB card?

my guess is pre loaded.

There already is an infrastructure for sending different updates to different nooks - Nook Colors get different updates than Nook Classics. Clearly the update software has to check some numbers in the Nook before doing an update. So, it would not seem difficult to do it in the update process.

I bought a Color Nook in Newington, NH this morning. They had them in stock. The guy at the display counter mentioned that an upgrade was probably coming in the next few weeks. I said I was glad that B&N seemed to be embracing the Android platform more (instead of hiding it), and he mentioned a few of the things HSN mentioned (e.g. email app) as possibilities. He wasn't telling me this stuff as a sales pitch (I already said I was buying it), but just as informal chit-chat. We shall see...

Interestingly, HSN changed the wording to:

Yeah, class action lawsuit I can see it now - "By letting the latecomers from HSN have the update first before their loyal patrons who have patiently waiting for months, B&N knowingly and maliciously created a situation where members of the class had severe panic attacks, heart attacks and other serious emotional, physiological and psychological conditions. "

A lot of these shopping channels are about hype - like quoting a "retail price" that's 50% above the real retail price then saying they are having a secret sale just for you of 25% off! What a deal!

For anyone wondering about the HSN preview, it was pretty lame. They showed angry birds and a drawing app for kids and mentioned email and flash. That was it, so still no idea what other apps may be available.

It's generally very annoying. What's more annoying is that this is how we have to find out about a new update.

HSN was total BS just like I thought it would be. They kept stating the nookcolor was brand NEW--BS! They stated their units WOULD BE the first to get the UPDATE--BS! The apps they showed were lame. They did mention the upgrade will be available in mid-April, but as most of what they stated was BS I would take it all with a grain of salt.

EDIT: I seem to remember the guy making a comment about "there will be new book apps" but I seriously doubt that those two bozos even know that much about the nookcolor. He probably just meant "nookcolor apps" in general terms. Basically, it was what many expected--a sales pitch. You can choose to believe everything a used car salesperson tells you, but you will probably regret it later. My favorite part of the pitch was when they showed the steady and constant progression of sales taking place. The numbers ticked along steadily increasing as though it was a clock ticking off seconds. I'm just glad I recorded it so that I was able to fast forward through it.

On one NC, they showed what looked like a flash video playing on one of the HSN pages. They showed Angry Birds and a drawing app.
I have a strong suspicion that these "updated" NC are just rooted devices because you never see the guy actually navigating to and opening the flash webpage and the apps.

Did some googling and I think that drawing pad might be a port of Drawing Pad ipad app.
