Brilliant information and options... when I started out with this I didn't think I'd be able to do much formatting at all. Even a little will be great, and I like the idea of making a PDF the right size for my reader - then I can share the recipes with family and friends, whether they have ereaders or not.
Nice that most of these apps are free, too! I'll certainly report back with how I'm going. |

Just a quick update... I have typed in all my recipes as TXT files and downloaded OpenOffice (took a couple tries to get an Australian mirror that worked for me).
Next I plan to organise the recipes into groups (entrees, desserts, etc). Then I will paste the recipes into Writer and begin playing with formats, fonts, TOC, etc. (the fun stuff!). My Sony will be shipped soon from my friends in the States over here to me in Australia. Maybe I'll finish this before it arrives! |

Success! The PRS-350 arrived, and my 700ish page PDF file of recipes looks great on there.
![]() I used OpenOffice Writer to format the recipes with a page size that fits the reader. Once it was finished, I exported the document to PDF. For navigation, I created one main Table of Contents at the beginning (Soups, Entrees, Desserts, etc). Then, within each "chapter" or section, I created a more detailed TOC (list of soups in the soups section, etc). ![]() |

Glad the OpenOffice PDF export suggestion is working out for you.
![]() Getting the Table of Contents working in open office and getting hyper links to export is pretty tricky, so I am surprised that you got it all figured out so quickly, good work! ![]() |

Would you share your recipes with other PRS-350 users?

@pendragginp and SeaBookGuy - Thank you!
![]() @delphin - Yes, it took me a while to get the hyperlinks working! I was so excited when what I hoped could work with the TOCs actually did. @elcreative - I was feeling like I was on top of technology... for about 5 minutes. ![]() @Phogg - I considered sharing the little cookbook here, but I think over time some of the recipe attributions have been lost. Also, I own a Thermomix, so many of my recipes are adapted for that machine. I could put together a shorter, cleaned-up version if people would be interested. ?? You're more than welcome, but you realize you're obligated to stick around and keep contributing yourself now, right?
What's a Thermomix? |

Nothing to worry about with LibreOffice... it is OpenOffice but renamed and with a new support base... and already updated from OO but all you need to do is download it (it's also free), install and use... still Writer...

Does it build upon Open Office, or is it completely separate (OK to delete that first)?

A Thermomix is a $2k cooking machine that replaces most of your standard kitchen appliances (except the toaster). It was great for me moving from the US to Australia, as I had to switch from 110V to 220V - instead of purchasing all the appliances again, I just bought a Thermomix. Makes cooking from scratch easy - it can knead dough in 45seconds, chop a kilo of onions in 10 seconds, make risotto in about 20 minutes (heating, stirring)... I use it many times each day. I used to be scared of cooking anything more complicated than pasta, but it's too easy now. Thermomix is available in Canada but not the US (yet). More info here (and no, I don't sell them!): http://www.superkitchenmachine.com/2...ntro-demo.html |

Machine looks interesting, though I am a bit old fashioned and do stuff by hand. I cook for 20 to 40 highschool age kids on wednesdays and need to be able to scale things up.

So Libre-Office has everything OpenOffice did plus a few minor updates. Don't expect too much though; because, from what I have found, it still has many of the same issues that plagued OpenOffice (i.e. still crashes randomly too often, and some simple actions like loading or saving a badly formatted file in html format will crash it every time) Some say it's faster, but on my Ubuntu box I didn't notice any change (if anything Libre-Office loads a second or two SLOWER). Also, for a team that wasn't happy with Oracle and wanted to 'clean up the act', I have to say I am NOT IMPRESSED SO FAR, because when I installed LibreOffice from the official PPA it promptly DELETED my OpenOffice install without permission (they can run side by side), then also proceeded to SCREW-UP my common system files so bad that my Firefox couldn't spell check anymore until I went in and manually reinstalled aspell. 'At-A-Boy' "Libre-Office" team, way to go, if this represents your best effort then PLEASE give the project BACK TO ORACLE! |
