I'd reccomend "calibrating" the battery. Fully charge and drain it about 3 times, so that you can get the max usage out of the batter.

First Step: Update Firmware.
Second (At least for me): Request and Download Shell hack.
Third: Install Enhanced iPDF and FBReader. Full screen is really necessary for PDF's not formatted for the iLiad. FBReader gives you access to just about any other format you'd want.
Sorry to ask stupid questions, but where do I download "FBReader" from and how do I install it? From a PC, or directly onto the Iliad from the Internet?

I've successfully connected to the iDS and it tells me that I have the latest version of the firmware (2.10). I've also successfully converted one of my books to Mobipocket, transferred it to the Iliad, and that works fine, too, although it seems to lose some of the formatting compared with the Sony version.

Check out this thread.

It's probably best if you install it on a memory card (SD/MMC or CF). Unzip the installer to the card, and run it from the iLiad. It's pretty simple

I'd like to get the iPDF and Shell hack so I can read comics. How do I request the Shell and where do I get the Enhanced iPDF?
Thanks

As a matter of interest, by the way, I got a "shoulder bag" carrying case with my Iliad. It wasn't mentioned in the contents list on the box, but there it was inside the box with all the cables, charger, hub, etc, inside it. Seems pretty sturdy.

Have to say, though, that I hate that hub thing. What a dreadful way to charge the machine! Why they couldn't have put a power socket directly on the machine itself is beyond me. The problem is that the cable which connects the hub to the Iliad itself is so short and stiff that I find it impossible to arrange things so I can comfortably hold the Iliad while it's connected to the hub.

It's VERY nice. I think I still prefer the Sony as a book reader, though, but perhaps I'll get used to the Iliad with time .

If you get tired of your iLiad, you'll know I will gladly take care of it for you *GRIN*

Btw, don't forget to update your profile now that you are lucky owner of two e-book readers.

Harry, I wouldn't mind an other Iliad/Sony comparison at some point. Especially if you write it.

You mean like this one which I wrote this morning?

I must stress that these are very preliminary impressions, and may very well change with time!

Absolutely. I am guessing that they didn't put the power socket in the iLiad for internal space reasons, but it's hard to imagine a more awkward placement of the multipurpose cable socket or a less ergonomic design for the cable and "hub". I'm guessing that they thought they'd have a cradle out right away (it's been coming "real soon now" for about a year, I think). Personally, I'm not sure I'd want to read with the iLiad in a cradle, either. I'd have much preferred a regular power socket in the upper half of the device somewhere, where it could be out of the way while reading. Especially considering the short charge life of the iLiad. Oh well. I still like the beast.

A cradle would defeat the Iliad's 'Write' functions would it...
