That's not a bad idea -- except for the fact that 'most' public libraries are publicly funded and free to local residents. Libraries are then back in the same old song of trying to (fill in the blank - get loaners returned, get fees paid, get repeat renewals paid ..) recover money that they effectively 'loan' to patrons in good faith. I think it is a very poor idea to require fees for public library use, but they may be pushed that way which will discriminate against those who might not be able to pay or who would choose to terminate library use on 'general principle.'

I don't wish to get into a battle over funding, but reading is public education and should be offered and available as such. We are having enough trouble getting zombie-brained children away from the TV and xBox as it is.

It's easy enough to implement and you wouldn't be allowed to check out an ebook for a second or more time until after you pay the fee.

Everyone gets a free read the first time and it would only apply to ebooks that had a publisher imposed checkout limit.

Well, I managed to get the books "unexpired" on my laptop by setting the date back on the laptop itself. Unfortunately, there doesn't seem to be any way to change the date on the nook so I guess I'm out of luck. As soon as I transfer the books to the nook, they come up as expired or about to expire. One of the books that expires I think in 5 days is over 500 pages so that's not going to get read. I waited over a month to get it too.

I'm not likely to read them on the laptop.

Can't believe there's not some kind of workaround. It's got to be embedded somewhere (exp. date). I thought I found it when I opened the acsm file for one of them but when I changed the date, the file wouldn't open. (Don't worry, I made a duplicate of the file before I started messing with it.) I'd be happy if I could even renew the books but that's not an option.

I'd gladly pay a fee for a library if I could keep the books longer or renew them. Using the library for ebooks is saving me a LOT of money regardless of the drawbacks.

Did you look around or ask on the Nook forum? I know how to change the date on my Sony, but I don't have a Nook so I don't know the instructions. I imagine there's a way, though.

I haven't personally tried this because I can read a library book in a few days or less (fast reader), but folks on nookboards found this out:

Sweet! Just wish I'd known that before I loaded all the books into ADE! Too late now!

There should be a name, like Moore's Law or Murphy's Law, for the phenomenom of "no matter how far apart I stagger my ebook holds, they will all come in at the same time."

We could call it "elemenoP's Law."

Interesting read, thanks.

Unfortunately, it didn't work for me. When I tried opening the acsm file two days later today, it failed. Downloading a new ascm file did work/open in ADE. So, I still have access to the book, but not on a time-shifted basis like those lucky Nook folks - the correct number of lending days remains for me.

I think some people found it varied by library, whether it worked or not.

The nookboard folks are posting that this method no longer works. Someone at Overdrive must have read the boards and fixed the loophole.

Well, one of the ones I'd not finished came available again. I downloaded it and I'm getting a "no record is found on this computer for this loan" in ADE....great!

Okay, I have read enough - strip the drm and read the book. I have to guess you pay your taxes. Those taxes support your library. They purchased the book and it can be loaned out to anyone. Only you cannot read it.
