You think computer and electronics companies don't do that? The only difference is, a tech-savvy person is less likely to be swayed by a midlist brand like Magnavox, and more likely to be swayed by a high-end brand like Bang & Olufsen. Whereas the non-techie may like the B&O, but when he sees the price difference, he'll go for the Magnavox.

Does it count if you're only brand loyal on a micro-way?

As in, I'd only buy Lenovo for laptops, but ASUS for netbooks. Canon for still cameras, but that other brand for camcorders...

I'm die-hard Bissel for carpet cleaning, but for vacs, no way. Dyson rules those.

...and, of course, the choices can change as years and models come and go.

I don't read Cnet much but I do listen to their buzz out loud podcast. They're pretty anti apple there and pro android, or pro anybody but apple. One host broke down and bought a Mac air and got ripped (albeit jokingly) for it.

I do think the tech geeks tend toward kool-aid on one hand and hatergade on the other. Just read any thread having to do with iPad or __ vs __. Me, I'm an anti fan. I own a kindle but I think it's ugly, mobi sucks (hard to edit, can't even do freaking drop cap), and I actively root for other companies because I don't want Amazon to dominate more than they already do.

I can understand that. I'm not a fan of the Kindle but I [mostly] adore Amazon...

My preference would be for all booksellers to sell books that work on all devices. Any type of handcuff attempt annoys me. I enjoy shopping where the urge hits me...and I want to be able to shop at any place that sells books.

I'm probably in the top 15% of tech-oriented people - maybe just plain "geek" to some. I'm not so much brand loyal as anti-brand..... for example, I have bought no Apple products at all for myself (wife has an iPod), no Kindle products..... do have 2 Nooks between me and my wife, but not real thrilled with them. Strangely enough, I do like Microsoft Windows and Office (after trying alternatives and not getting useful service out of them). Have had a Blackberry and liked it, switched to an Android phone after 2 years and also like it, not sure what my next phone will be - but almost certainly not an iPhone. Also can say that for computers I stay away from Dell.
