How does Borders go under, but Books-a-million stays in business?

I know our local BAM's sales are up over last year - even though Borders is closing less than half a mile away.
They generally have more stock than Borders had here, and they have a much bigger Christian/Inspirational section - which probably makes a difference given as they're focused in the South and East. I also don't think it hurts that their online pricing is competitive with Amazon - so it's likely that they get more off the web than Borders. |

I like Borders but B&N and BAM do have a bigger selection. I'm not into the Christian/Inspirational thing but they still have more. I have a BAM in my little suburb of New Orleans and I have a B&N in a neighborning town. I like the "feel" of the B&N more and will go there but the BAM has been open for about 15 years.
When I am in the city, there is (until May) a Borders on Vets in Metairie and a B&N not far away. the B&N gets my business when I am S. of the lake because of the selection thing. The big Borders on St. Charles in the old Bultman building opened not too long ago and it is closing as well, which is unfortunate as it is huge and has a good selection as well as being a very cool location. |

Looks like no more additional closings where I am.
Personally, I have always preferred Borders, but that is because it was the dominant store where I was. We went from the small mall stores like Walden to Borders. Wasn't until later we started getting B&N, and even still they were further away from the stores I liked, or not as convenient. |

so, is this a good time to invest in a kobo? or should I just go with a cheap 7in tablet like CVS's Craig? [cause that is really looking attractive for it's price right now]

The Borders issues aren't going to kill Kobo, if that's what you're asking. (Or rather, I hope it won't kill Kobo...) Kobo existed before Borders and will continue to do so.

well, I was thinking more along the lines of the discounted items. I just called the borders express that is closing here in NH and asked if they had Kobos. They did, but the lady was so cranky that I really doubt I'm going to spend time to check them out.

![]() If it's a decent price, probably worth picking up. I've heard people in these forums suggesting that somewhere around $75 is an "acceptable" price for it, given the features and comparing it to the Sony 350 and Kindle 3 price-to-feature ratio. |

They're only closing one here in Vegas, so far. One I used to frequent when I lived closer to it. May have to pay them a visit to see what discounts and such they have running and pick up a few kids books.

Is there an estimate of how many people will be losing their jobs after this?

**_ Borders workers: About 6,000 of Borders' 19,500 workers will lose their jobs in the restructuring.** And that's just for the initial 200-store closure. With the additional 75...probably closer to 8,000 people jump in the unemployment line. |
