If it's about having access to alternative viewpoints, small local bookstores would be the worst possible thing, followed by larger brick-and-mortar stores and then the internet. I just love seeing the inherent contradictions built into a technophobic world-view laid bare so effectively

I have found that having an e reader is much easier than going to book stores. All the books you could want are conviently at your finger tips at more inexpensive price most of the time. Of course some of us prefer the tangiable parts of owning a book but I really think that e readers are just more practical now a days.

With my eBook reader and the good people of MR I've found many many authors I'd never have found going to a B&M store.
Since getting my Cybook Gen3 a few years ago I've only gone into and actual bookstore, new or used, for children's books. Once my son starts reading chapter books like Hardy Boys I'm sure I wont have to go to a bookstore even for him. I'll just set him up with a simple eBook reader of his own. He already has his eye on the BeBook Mini I'm not using much any more. |

Yes, for me the internet and online shopping are great when I know what I want to find and search directly for it. Browsing in a physical store means it is much more likely for me to find something I was not specifically looking for but am interested in. A recommendation I forgot, a new book I missed, a subject I did not even know books existed about.

As an aside (only slightly off-topic), the novel "A Novel Bookstore" by Laurence Cosse is an interesting mystery wrapped around an inside look at setting up a bookstore strictly for 'good' novels. Lots of information on the risks in being boutique in a market of giant mega-stores. Though internet sales are included, nothing is said about eBooks. A novel worth reading.
