It's because it's an automated site; they are picking up a list of annoying public domain stuff that Amazon has added thru it's DTP system, that are not labeled as "public domain books" under the publisher (which is how you manage to eliminate several thousand books when searching -domain and sorting by price).

There are also 29 of them in German that are now free (also public domain, presumably in the US, since I see them in the US store).

Not sure if this s the rigt thread as I am a newbie here. Are there any free book lists on this site that can help those from the uk. I have just joined this site ad am disappointed to find that the lists dont include those outside the Us.

An earlier poster was right: in grumbling about there being no free books if you don't live in America, I should indeed have said 'America, Canada or the UK'. Which still leaves, um, 242 countries without free Amazon books by my reckoning.....

Given that Amazon will sell you a dead trees book irrespective of where you live, the hoary old argument about legal reasons seems rather pathetic. Many of their free books (non-free in 242 countries) are identical to Gutenberg et. al -- whose site is open for downloading to all.

I live in Australia and I get free books all the time. I did buy my Kindle in the US though so perhaps Amazon just thinks i'm on an extended holiday however I am pretty sure everyone in Australia gets their books for free. Am I wrong?
