I do not plan to spend any more money on Apple hardware or content.

I have googled how to strip DRM from Apple iBooks, the best I could find was some Python stuff that was hard to follow for a non techie like myself.

Are there any applications or simple instructions to remove the iBook DRM?

Buying a Nook or a Kindle will get you into the same trap again. Both have their own DRM schemes and books bought with their stores are only readable on their devices.

Sonys may be more expensive but they are a lot more userfriendly with their matte touchscreens and the endless possiblities to buy from.

Same for the Nook and Sony

You cannot read B&N DRM books on Kindle or Sony. And there are tons of mobi libraries online, plus Calibre converts non DRM ePub books to mobi in a matter of seconds.

If I am correct, there is not yet a way to remove the DRM from books purchased through Apple and iBooks. I found this out after getting my iPad and buying two books from iTunes. Of course, as others have said, non-DRM epub books can be read in iBooks.

Since then I do not buy books from Apple but generally buy from Amazon and Sony. The DRM Books from these can be made DRM free.

You are right. I have been looking for a week now and the consensus is that there is no way to remove Apple's DRM from iBook purchases, yet. As several others have posted, other stores have similar DRM, but those can be easily removed and then synced to most any reader or app DRM free.

Indeed. This is an old post, but after reading someone asking to google the "alf" stuff, it is displayed on their website there's still no way do decrypt apple DRM iBooks, which is a shame. As I do not read on my iPhone anymore, I just bought a Kobo. And so the few books I bought on the Apple Store are not readable anymore to me...

Too bad because I would like to use Calibre to store my books and read them on my Kobo. No way I will ever again read an eBook on my iPhone now. An eInk reader is so much more enjoyable. And the Kobo is really fine. Sure it is black and white, but who needs color to read books? The pocket hard paper books I bought sometimes were all black and white too

Well, I do use the iPad for reading too - but I sideload all my books into iBooks. There's no way I'd ever buy from the iBookstore, with their stupid DRM.

If you use Kindle for iOS this means you buy books on the Amazon store, right? They have DRM too ^^ Sure, unlike iBooks from Apple, both mobi DRM and Adobe DRM are easy to crack

This proves that Apple is good when it comes to protection, if nobody managed yet to break the Apple DRM system

I never download a pirated book, but I like being able to strip the DRM, so I can use Calibre to manage the books

And I have no iPad, just an iPhone (I have read the 10 books I have bought on iTunes with it) and a Kobo I just bought. Really, eInk is wonderful, we have the feeling of reading a real book

A lock that nobody has looked at isn't necessarily a good lock, just an ignored one.

Isnt that interesting. I bought a Sony PRS650 because thats what I wanted, the feeling of reading a real book, when I was reading ebooks. I am certainly very impressed with the resolution on the reader, and the features that come with it, but I get really annoyed by the little sceen flash on page turn. I'm a fast reader so the flash is quite often. I know its not something one can avoid, but it has annoyed me sufficiently to stop using it. Again. I keep trying. The size of the unit is perfect.

Have you tried the new Nook or Kindle? Page refresh has been improved or minimized. It happens now every 5 or 6 pages I think.

Amazon's DRM is trivial to crack nowadays. I usually convert mine to epub and then read on iBooks (as a matter of fact, I always convert my purchased books to HTML, in order to fix layout, typos and formatting to suit my tastes).

It only proves that nobody cares enough about Apple's DRM to try to crack it.

Personally, I hope Apple's DRM remains untouched. Therefore fewer people will be tempted to buy from their store

You are better off converting to ePub and fixing up the ePub because it is then easier to convert to any other format you want and you'll also have the ePub ready to go if you want it.

No, I'm in Oz so the Nook is out, I think, and the Kindle is something I wouldnt touch with a 10 foot bargepole. Its Amazon, so its out. (yes I'm one of the anti-amazon league because of their attitude about Stanza)

So far as I know Apples DRM hasn't been cracked yet. If anyone knows how to do it it would be my friend Apprentice Alf.
