Avatars, why not our own pictures?

jgaiser, I've a pair of glasses exactly like those, I doubt I have one of me thats 45 years old, there was that one of me on the bearskin rug, all nuddy, not something anyone should ever have to see.

Kenny, I saw the self portrait, and as I said about TGS' avatar, great avatar, in your case it could be a great avatar.

I've used it there before....I'm kinda partial the my goth avatar at the moment though.

Well, some of use want our avatars to be, well avatars. That is, we want our images not to be what we look like, but more like what we are.

To each his own, I'm not saying anyone should change to their own picture, I as I mentioned before, was just curious why we didn't

And to take it the next step. Why not use real names? I believe hiding behind aliases and avatars just invites people to misbehave. Just my opinion.

I debated but in the end opted not to post my photo for several reasons.

First, and probably most important, my dog is significantly more attractive and lovable. Second, truth be told, I don't like having my picture taken -- a throwback to my youthful days in the 1960s when the last thing one wanted was for J. Edgar Hoover or your local draft board to be able to easily identify you. Third, for the same reason I do not have a Facebook account and have never been to Facebook -- I like a little bit of privacy and anonymity, which is quickly lost when you post an identifying picture. Fourth, and finally, it gives my online colleagues something to look forward to should we ever meet in person .

I agree to a certain extent. There is a point at which some anonymity gives you more open discussion I think.

I think that there is something to be said about being anonymous, I am actually a very private person, but I figure if anyone recognizes me, it's not like I pretended to be a 14 yearold girl, looking for an older man

Kenny, nice to meet you, my name is Anthony NLN, the only reason I don't use my real name is that its not that hard to google using my name and this forum will come up, my picture isn't as well known Hell neither am I

and I do believe part of the query is, why not cop to wearing someone elses skin when you really are? wearing a nice looking skin is all fine and well, but be honest about it! the Christmas Elf wasn't me (much to the chagrin of many here), nor the fat guy, nor the lady in feathers. I have used my cats, dog, and several other avatars, but I've always been candid about what/who they were. *off to change skins*

I agree 100%, it's not really the avatars that are obviously not you, altho I could believe you were the girl in feathers KK, I don't like when people say they are someone and they're not. Don't get me wrong I'm not suggesting anyone is doing that here
