One thing I don't liek about iPads is their weight. I find it very uncomfortable to hold in your lap and read from.

Sure enough I will try reading my iPhone again without them, since I don't need them for reading but distance.
I totally agree with you, I find it completely SILLY to use a reading light on an ebook reader device. When I found out that those don't have a backlight but need a reading light to read in the dark, I decided never ever to get those devices. Thats what I like so much about iPhone (or probably next step iPad!). Really can't get myself to buy a black/white ereader device that I cannot use in dark spots. Also, I just love colored covers, photos or other images.
A book light works great on e-ink. It's really not that bad. I prefer it to my Nook color in the dark. Much easier on the eyes. I use the NC only when my kids have run off with my booklight somehow and I don't have a lamp nearby.

Since you don't want to do e-ink...Try reading with eyeglasses on instead. Try a bigger LCD screen and thus a bigger font. I can't imagine reading on a device as small as a smartphone. I'd be flipping the page every 5 seconds, and the eyestrain from the little screen would drive me crazy.

Changing a page on iPod Touch is just a tap of finger on the screen, not a harder press like on the e-ink readers. Really no effort at all to flip pages. I also have a large font on screen and have about two sentences on one page, but as I mentioned earlier, why woudl I want to have twenty sentences on one page?

BCGIRL, people have had the need to have light in order to read their books so why now a sudden change? I find it very hard on eyes to read from my iPod Touch in darkness and if I turn down the light intensity of the screen, also the contrast suffers making it harder to read.

Both have strengths and weaknesses, but if I could choose/would have money I would get e-ink reader in a heartbeat.

Although I prefer to read on my Kindle, I don't have any problems reading on my iP4 (with white letters on black) for a hour or so at a time. But I really don't enjoy reading black letters on a white background...so I'd change the background first. After that, I would increase the font size - a size that is comfortable on paper may not be the most comfortable size for reading on an LCD.

If that doesn't work, you should consider trying an e-ink reader. They really are quite different from LCDs. I'll post again some magnified e-ink and iPad screens:

The site for these is http://www.bit-101.com/blog/?p=2722

You are correct, of course, that e-ink readers require light - and at least for me, a little more light that books; only after replacing my 75w reading light with a 100w bulb did I feel like I really had as much light as I wanted. But, under those conditions, I really do enjoy reading the Kindle more.

(But the light issue is also a reason why I often end up reading my iPhone while out and about).

I read pretty fast. I read about 2 pages a minute. At 2 sentences a page, I'd be reading them faster than I could turn the page. Craziness. I guess if you're a slow reader you could manage a couple of sentences per page. I had an ipod touch. I would drive me crazy to try to read on it.

I need text in advance because I hate turning the page every 3 nanoseconds.

If so, I just prefer color but does that mean that these color devices do not have e-ink?
Do you read during the day or at night?

I got my iPad planning to use it as an e-reader but it made my eyes tired. (I do wear reading glasses and keep the prescription current btw.) I got an eink nook STR and I love it for reading. I love the iPad too but not for reading books. I think it might be pretty individual, which people prefer.

Things to try...

Increase the font size.

Dim the light to balance with the light of the room.

In a dark room...use "night mode" (light text on black background).

Increase margin (if line size is too long. They eyes can tire if they have to travel too far).

Problem is solved. The unthinkable happened...I got a Sony PRS-T1 for Christmas and I love it. In a cover with the cutest reading light, Its great to carry with me, and when I'm home I curl up with the iPad to read magazines or browse internet or whatever. The ebook reader is great for reading novels!

Kindle parper white, or later will make reduce the eye strain. Actually, the problem is that the blue-light emitted from the screens(iPhone, iPad or iPod touch) causes eye strain, even some eye diseases like xerophthalmia.

http://mashable.com/2012/03/19/ipad-...ay-eye-strain/

If you still want to use an Apple device to read, here are some tips for you:
1. Use blue-light protection app on your smartphones.(Android: https://play.google.com/store/apps/d...ghtfilter.free),
2. Reduce your time on playing computer games, watching TV etc.
3. A pair of eyewear like Taime computer eyewear(http://www.halovis.com) that can filter UV and blue-light is your best choice.
