Borders didn't have the cash to make this happen; they couldn't afford to 'take the hit' to generate revenues later.

Well, I also see the Kindle at Target and Best Buy... but Amazon is still the one behind it. And Borders is a major U.S. bookstore that didn't produce a reader, but because it wasn't sold at, say, B&N (and who the hell has heard of the Kobo outside of these forums or Borders? not the average person, I assure you), it's a general assumption that the Kobo was produced by Borders. A wrong assumption, but a logical one.

But one difference is that Amazon has no brick and mortar store fronts, and the boxes still say that it is an Amazon product. Kobo mentions Borders no where on its website, boxes, promotional material, etc. B&N makes the Nook, and it clearly states it is a B&N product on the device itself, the packaging, etc, etc.

One more thought, the Kobo broke into mainstream USA as an eReader device that Borders pushed. Therefore the Kobo to most consumers associate it with Borders, thats just the way it is.

Oddly enough I looked around the Borders in our local mall last night and couldn't see an eReader anywhere, just a couple of cases. No display stands nothing.
