Yes, but unless they're shutting down the business (which they may be), then the Receiver still doesn't want to alienate customers. Loyal customers who feel screwed over are going to cease being a revenue stream.

Hey guys, why on earth didn't you all spend up those giftcerts at the first sign of bankruptcy last month?
Over here, we have unfortunately gotten used to businesses suddenly closing their doors at any moment. My nearest mall is a ghost town. SPEND THOSE CERTS WHILE THEY STILL HAVE VALUE. THEY COULD BECOME WORTHLESS VERY QUICKLY. |

I've seen reports of issues with the US company, but bear in mind we're talking here about the Australian company, which is totally separate, just as the British company was. I honestly don't recall seeing any issues mentioned in Australia, although I may of course have overlooked them.

Geography be darned, what I suggest is spend 'em if you got 'em.
They might not be spendable if you hold them. If all else fails, do your Christmas shopping early and get everyone books. If Borders is already putting up obstacles to using them, then you can bet it won't get easier to use them if you wait. |

Meanwhile ....
Borders U. S. refuses to allow applying their Borders Bucks loyalty credit towards agency e-books, claiming that falls under "discounting"! |

Large booksellers in Australia have behave like the proverbial "dog in the manger" for years, putting small retailers out of business, charging universally high prices and stocking rubbish (and I often suspect, cheap stock which may have been publishers remainders). They ignored on-line sales until they were forced into the market, they generally showed a business acumen which would have been disastrous with a corner snack shop. Maybe one good thing which could come out of this is that we will go back to having specialist, well-run book shops. However, I think any good bookshop managers have long since gone into other fields. |

I wonder what they will put in the vacant lot where my local Borders is located?! So many possibilities!!!
Borders is beginning to annoy me. I guess my ability to put up with them was a symptom of the fact of their still having anything that interested me in a local place. Now that is gone, and I am having a hard time caring. And I thought they were my preferred mega-bookstore. Hmm, I was wrong. How strange (oh, so not!). |
