JaylieG -- Thank-you for your reply.

I talked to Amazon Support and it appears the issue is that I live in Canada. The wall adapter is not included with Kindles shipped outside the US.

Blech.

huh? I paid 139$ for mine and got the adapter. Guess I am not understanding your comment.

hrynkiw -- sorry to hear that. :/ But now I know that as well. Hopefully you can find one for your kindle. I don't think they are that expensive..

The US version comes with the two pronged wall power adapter. I know that the Australia one does not but I thought that the Canadians got the wall power adapter. Some folks don't realize that the power adapter comes off to give the USB plug.

iPhone/iPod adapter works just fine to charge Kindle 3

I'm here to report that after a fair bit of research and two weeks of practical testing -- the small cube iPod/iPhone USB power adapter works just fine to charge the Kindle 3.
This one: http://store.apple.com/us/product/MB...co=MTA4NDYwODg

The specs for the two adapters (the Kindle wall adapter and the iPod/iPhone adapter) are almost identical.

Not really; without entering into much details:
Batteries (usually most rechargeable) tend to diminish their max recharge. (its an exponential distribution.
The best to do with rechargeable is to recharge them only when they hit rock-bottom; if you recharge when the charge still has over half the charging capacity you are shortening the lifespan of your batteries.

Usually, the lifespans is expressed as "charging cycles" as , over a certain number charges last less and less.

Batteries loose charge even if they are not being used, and most of this is because of electromagnetic fields within the device. If you care to read further about this you could google "hysteresis curve".

As far as I am aware, NiCd (nickel cadmium) batteries have a "memory effect" where over time as you charge and discharge the battery without completely discharging/charging them, the battery will "remember" and the available amount of charge will decrease.

Li+ (Lithium ion) batteries do not suffer from memory effect, but they do have a shelf life starting from when they were manufactured; as Lithium ion batteries age, they simply do not hold as much charge. However, I'm not sure what the standard shelf life of a Li-ion battery is.

Unfortunately, Kindles shipped to Canada do not include a wall-charger. I'm not sure when Amazon instituted this policy, but you now have to pay extra for the wall-charger outside of the U.S. It should be more obvious on the website that this is the case. Even a reconditioned Kindle 2 that I bought recently did not come with a charger.

On the other hand, most USB chargers will work, such as that for iPods.
