We have found that our students are able to use school neighbors' wifi to download all kinds of things that are unsuited to school time, school equipment, and school life in general. They also tend to use wifi to text each other in class (bad for testing and also bad for focusing on instruction). Really, trust me, there are not a lot of honorable uses of wifi for students in schools. Parents get mobile phones, etc., with the idea that it helps them stay in contact with their children in an emergency, but I have seen that happen about twice, in my career.

I would like to add that I am learning a great deal on these forums, and quite grateful for all the help!

I taught at three Colleges back in the day and I flat out banned the use of cell phones on test days. If I saw a cell phone out of a backpack it was an automatic F for cheating. If a student had reason to be worried about something at home (child, sick parent, sick dog, some type of potential emergency) they could leave the cell phone with me and I would get them if it rang.

I booted more then one student from the classroom for taking or making a cell phone call during class.

They are disruptive, disrespectful, and can be used for cheating. Bleech.

So I fully understand the WiFi concern. The good news is that the browser on the K3 does work but it is not exactly speedy and doesn't work great on sites that are not text based. Your students are likely to be annoyed with both of these issues. Also, you should be able to deregister the devices after you load books on them. I am not sure what that would do to the WiFi capability.

You might want to contact Amazon and let them know of your issue. It might behoove Amazon to have a line of wireless Kindles for educators and folks who don't want WiFi.
