Reader on the airplain - is it electronic device or not;) - Page 2

I haven't flown with any of my ereaders yet (I used to fly once or twice a month, but I've flown very little since I changed jobs a couple of years ago). But when I did fly, I would turn off the palmpilot I would play Zork on during takeoff or landing. I don't know how much RF interference such small devices can generate, but I don't need to be contributing any static to the pilots who are trying to listen to tower instructions around crowded airports. I'd generally have a magazine with me for such occasions, and I think I'd stay with that plan if I were to fly again now with a reader. The kind of magazines I get (e.g. jewelry design, MAKE, etc.) generally have content that I want in print form for image quality reasons anyway, though I expect this will change eventually.

The airline rules are simply bordering on caution. The electrical systems of modern airliners are very well shielded. It would be absolutely idiotic if they were not. Imagine all the interference as they are coming in for a landing!

The odds of any electronic device you may be operating during the flight affecting any of the electrical systems are as close to zero as it's possible to get at the present. However, it's impossible to actually test the systems reactions to every electronic device on the market. Without being able to do that, you can't categorically say it's 100 percent immune to every stray electromagnetic fields a device may emit. Someone may have inadvertently designed a circuit in their new device that just so happens to cause extreme disruption to the planes navigation system. So, on the side of caution, you are told to turn them off.

Better safe than sorry I say...

The answers here of the "just don't get caught" sort disturb me greatly... So you're saying it's OK to potentially jeopardize your life as well as everyone on the plane as long as the crew isn't aware you're doing it?? Baffling...

Sorry, but this totally contradicts all that you said before. And i dont think you are "jeopardising everyones life on the plane". What if you accidentally left it on? What a tragedy. So that statement is rather harsh. But you shure break the rules, even if they are totally nuts. But i also think it is totally nuts to drive everyone crazy with the stupid security measurements, while any serious terrorist will be able to get anything abord they want to. So who am i to argure here.

If the Sony Reader did interfere, the pilot would know about this and the flight would be stopped. As it doesn't, it's not an issue. But, as was said before, not every device can be tested and who knows about new devices and what signals they may end up sending out. I'd rather follow the rule and turn off my electronic device(s) rather then risk everyone's life aboard the plane. Just do me a favor for those of you not following the rules, STAY THE HELL OFF OF ANY PLANE I AM ON OR ANYONE I KNOW IS ON!

That's simple - you must use an iPod in it's vicinity!
iPods can make pacemakers malfunction

I use my Reader from take-off to landing on the helicoptors going out to the oil rigs here in Malaysia. No one has ever said anything to me about using it. Probably because they've had 5 choppers go down in the last 12 months so the crews too busy trying to keep the bird in the air rather than worrying about one passenger having an e-read.

as Nat says,when powered down, it's in standby, therefore emits exactly same amount of RF's (if any) as powered up. I will stick to reading newspapers during takeoff's and landings, simply dont see a difference between reading reader & paper news. But rules are rules, so have to obey them, just wonder if they would ever change them.

I was on a plane to Canada last year and the stewardess was doing her pre-landing check. She noticed me looking at an electronic device and was about to tell me to switch it off when she stopped and said "Oh is that one of those book things? Wow!". I smiled and answered an affirmative, and she went on without telling me to turn it off.

Guess it was ok then!

Ummm... No... I didn't contradict myself at all. I said "potentially". Look the word up...

As I said, it's a remote chance since the systems are as shielded from stray EMF and RF interference as possible, but since it's an impossibility to test everything, are you willing to potentially bet your life along with everyone else's on the plane that you aren't going to cause any interference with crucial systems?

I think it's a no brainer... If there is the slightest chance that my actions may cause a plane I'm traveling on to crash, I'd rather suffer a little inconvenience from turning off my gizmos than take the chance.
