My guess the answer to the international question is "The Nook is not sold outside the US." Phone calls for support will be expensive and the turn around time for sending a Nook back from Sweden is likely to be long. Making servicing any problem with the Nook complicated and annoying.
I know the 350 and 650 are supported in Europe. I am not as sure about the 950. It is also more likely that there are people where she live who have a Sony then a Nook because Nooks are not sold in Sweden. If I go to NY, I will make my way to the Tea Gschwendner store and not the BN store. I grew up going to the BN store in Boston and loved it. Then I went to grad school and shopped at the original Borders. I would have to say that a bookstore is a bookstore unless it is a specialized indie store, those can be pretty special. I would take her to a Best Buy and check out the Sony's there or a Sony store. |

As much as I love my Sony 350, I doubt I can expect a whole lot of support here in Sweden for a US bought device. Buying stuff in US and take back here is fine as long as you're aware that you're more or less on your own once you've made it to this side of the pond. If support and warranty is important, buying in USA is not a great option.
The brand (Sony) is represented here though, so at least there is a change of getting it repaired, should it break, although probably at own expense (probably not making it worth getting done). That could be troublesome with a Nook (or a Kindle), that's true. The Sony is very user friendly, so probably not much need for "in-house support" (tech savvy family member, the OP). How user friendly the Nook is I don't know. Such a pity the 650 isn't available, cause I think it would have been such a great choice! |

I should think that a warranty would be honored no matter where you bought the device. I know the Kindle warranty is an international warranty. If Sony only honors a warranty in the country of purchase then I would say that is awful customer service and really diminish the liklihood that I would buy one of their devices.

As I read the warranty sheet provided with the US bought Sony it only covers labor the first 90 days anyway. Or am I missing something? It also says in that document that it's only valid in the country of purchase (ie US in this case).

Nope. Add that to a list of reasons to not buy a Sony.

The Sony warranty is a 1yr international warranty. The 90 day period is: all items are repaired at no charge regardless if the owner is liable for the defect or Sony.
The 1yr period is: all items are repaired at no charge if it is a Sony fault and repair will be charged if it is the owners liability that the item is defect. This is not something speaking against that company but plain and simple normal warranty over here. We tend to hold the one liable who is responsible, not as is the US custom let the whole of all buyers pay for the repairs or send out new items via the price of the items. If you want a two year warranty under EU law you have to buy the item in an EU country. As a Sony PRS 650 costs 229€ which is 312$US and a PRS 350 costs us 179€ = 244USD I think it is only fair, that you don't have the same warranty options as I do, when I buy my stuff over here. As an EUresident gets it a whole lot cheaper when buying it in the US, why should they get the benefits they have not paid for? Last edited by Poppaea; 02-23-2011 at 03:06 PM. Thanks for all the good information!
I will recommend her to go and see the different e-readers live before making the decision. The Sony 650 looks really interesting but I'm afraid it's a bit over price limit. Shes only in her fiftieths, but I think she would like to read without reading-glasses ![]() |
