First one was a file from a friend for something he's going to self-publish and I got for a bit of beta-ing.

First one that anybody here might have heard of was The Sharing Knife by Lois McMaster Bujold.

My first book on my Nook Classic was Peter Pezzelli's Home to Italy, which was free at the time. The first book that I purchased on the Nook was Stephen King's Under the Dome, which I bought while sitting in my car in the parking lot at work after reading the sample. Being able to buy a book just like that -- WHEE!

1st free e-book: something from the Baen Free Library which I already owned in paper and wanted to try in e-. Chances are good that it's Born to Run or Wizard's Bane, but I couldn't positively say for sure.

1st e-book that I hadn't previously read in paper: another choice between Baen freebies, The Warslayer and Sheepfarmer's Daughter, both of which I started roughly at the same time (but I think I finished Warslayer first because it was shorter).

1st paid e-book: Judith Tarr's Ars Magica, on sale for half-price during Read an e-Book Week last year. Still haven't gotten around to reading it yet.

First Ebook was a very cheap book "Lone Star Ranger by Zane Grey which I bought to check and see if the ADE/Library was going to work for me.

I then downloaded "Rifles" by Mark Urban

The first significant ebook I read for leisure (ie - more than just a short story on my computer screen, and not a textbook) came after I got my first ereader, and that book was Lost City of Z by David Grann. A book completely outside my normal preferences, but I bought it because Amazon recommended it to me and it had great reviews and, hey, whaddya know, I can just click a button and read it. The impulse purchase drew me in, and I loved every second of that book.

(edit) And since everyone else also listed their first freebie, the first freebie I read was Cory Doctorow's Little Brother. I was less enthralled with that one.

My first ebook (bought) was Dragonquest by Anne McCaffrey, also from Fictionwise, on 16th January 2003, for $5.24.

Baen free library got me started, then I started stumbling over free books in .lit format. Eventually bought the Jetbook then a Jetbook Light.

Now my current collection is over 14 gig and 23,000 books with over a thousand authors. Possible there is some amount of duplication in that. As it has grown beyond my interest in keeping it straight. Will I read them all, no, not likely. Am I trying, well, sorta. I certainly love having the option to try.

My jetBook Lite came with 100 books. I started three or four at the same time, and the first I finished was The Art of War by Sun Tsu.

I have yet to pay for an eBook. My first free download was the short story East Village Noir by Russell Atwood, which I picked up during Read an eBook Week last year.

At a book a day, 23,000 books would take just under* 63 years to finish. Hopefully you're young!

*Yes, just under. Don't forget leap years!

I only got my first e-reader in October, and already I have no idea what I initially read on it. I do know that the first books I bought were Shirley Jackson's Just an Ordinary Day and Cornell Woolrich's Rendezvous in Black.

The God Delusion by Richard Dawkins on 12/23/09, onto my new BB Storm 2. I found it very convenient, living in the bible belt, to be able to read this book, covertly, anywhere.

I purchased Under the Dome by Stephen King, three days later.

"Time Travelers Never Die" by Jack McDevitt was the first ebook I ever bought. I don't remember what my first freebie was- something from Baen, I think.
