There has never been any official HP ebooks, so none of them will have ever had DRM.

Not until Rowling comes to her senses.
When she finally does, I will buy them all the day they come out. |

"And some customers have complained of the same experience with Harry Potter books. Amazon says the Kindle versions of all these books were illegal. Someone uploaded bootlegged copies using the Kindle Store's self-publishing system, and Amazon was only trying to look after publishers' intellectual property. " http://www.slate.com/id/2223214/ New York Times "Amazon appears to have deleted other purchased e-books from Kindles recently. Customers commenting on Web forums reported the disappearance of digital editions of the Harry Potter books and the novels of Ayn Rand over similar issues." I can only assume that it was one of these versions that I have gotten hold of that contains the original metadata which reconverting removes... Last edited by grizedale; 02-21-2011 at 03:43 PM. |

My HP books are elsewhere but don't many books contains a "DO NOT COPY" warning at the front - meaning you cannot do it even for personal use??? Or have courts (US) actually okayed photocopying books you own for personal backup?

It's not like they scan all your books for any offending text. They knew the filename and their own id number for the book, so they deleted them. Beyond that is "format shifting" books even legal? Not to mention, I'm sure millions of people have scanned in and OCRed their own HP books. ![]() |

Regarding scanning books in the US... The last I heard, there's no law either way, and the general consensus is that it's ok to do, as long as it's for personal use. Basically, they treat it just like the copying of CD music. Personal use only, but no one has tested it in court. I think the music industry started to years ago, but backed off. My personal lawyer says it's fine, so I feel safe. ![]() |

I recently read that Amazon made a statement that they would NOT delete ANY books on anybody's Kindle in the future. I think this decision was from the fallout of the deleted George Orwell books.

I have loads of DRM free books on my Kindle, some purchased from independent publishers, some from the darknet. I wouldn't email them to my Kindle via Amazon through, I always add them direct via the Calibre 'send to device' button.

Sorry, but after changing the name of the kindle I bought for my wife and the new name appeared in my amazon account. I will never turn the wireless on again. Not knowing what other information it is sending. I will transfer files via my computer only. It appears to me that the Kindle my have what is called Traitorware built into it. Now if there were a firewall that I could install to stop outgoing traffic that would be a different story. It works fine the way it is. So, I will probably not update the firmware as I see no need for the new options. Take care.

Amazon is supposed to know the name of your registered Kindle. It's how they keep multiple devices registered to the same account separate. The name is how YOU choose which device you're buying/sending the ebook for/to -- especially when you're downloading the file to your PC and side-loading it. ![]() If it's that big of a deal to you, I suggest deregistering the device from your account entirely. Or better yet, returning it for a device that has no wireless capabilities. Last edited by DiapDealer; 02-22-2011 at 09:55 AM. |

If he has no use for the wireless capabilities I see no real point in registering it with any Amazon account. I'm not sure what use all the information that the Kindle reports back to Amazon would be in that case.
