Nah, not me. A simple web browser and 3G, yeah, that could be nice, but not to buy books. If I could connect to the library though and borrow on the go, THAT would be super-duper-mega-cool!

Yep, my sister decided she wanted an ereader because she is tired of lugging a lot of books to her classes. We looked and some of her books were not available in e-format at all, some were available everywhere... and some were only available for Kindle. She is not as savvy with computers as I am (and I live across the country from her) so I don't think setting up Calibre and Tools is a realistic option for her. So a Kindle it is.

I think Sony might well have to offer web browsing on the next 6" model to compete with Amazon.

Regarding the Reader Library etc., I've used it enough myself to know that my mother would not be comfortable with it. She is not of the computer generation and many things that are intuitive to you or I are confusing to her. For me there is no "should," there's only what she is likely to be happy with and what she isn't. Plugging the reader into the computer (which requires a cord she may or may not be able to find) every time she wants a book falls into the "isn't happy with" category. I stand by my argument that the Kindle is flat easier to use for a non-tech inclined person who just wants to buy and read books easily. It is not perfect, it is not best for everyone or even for everyone who thinks it's best, and it's not what I want (I love my Sony and I did an awful lot of research before choosing it), but the Kindle is a good device that works well and has the most convenient feature set for many people. |

I happen to be lucky enough to have an incredibly terrific library system.
My parents, on the other hand, have a pretty good system, that's not all that well-located to obtain print books; moreover, there really aren't any print stores all that convenient to them either (plus my dad is 82 with Parkinsons). The Kindle works great for them! The 950 costs $100 more than the K3 w/3G. |

US posters should remember that Amazon is not nearly as dominant outside of the US; neither is there free wi-fi on every corner and in some places, Amazon still surcharges for downloads. As for what I might wish for ... free 3g with the ability to go to *any* website to download books, eg library, smashwords, author sites... in epub of course. :P |

We could go to Fictionwise, for example, would would detect the device being used to connect to their website as the reader.. easily log in to their system and download books from our library shelves, buy books etc. Sony would of course need to choose between locking it to their own store only - to tie in some profits in an Amazon/Apple style, or going for broader appeal by allowing them to connect to any compatible store. I personally don't see any need for 3G. Not in the UK or USA anyway. I don't know anyone in the UK without a wifi in their home (I'm sure there are some people). There's wifi hotspots all over the UK. I'm pretty sure that the USA is peppered with them as well. All easily done, if they'd just add wifi. I know the Kindle is killing the Reader for sales, but it doesn't change the fact that the Reader is selling tons, there's plenty of room in the market for a worldwide Reader that works on wifi. |

Good post, Halk.

DRM is the only thing you have to watch for, just like when buying epubs for Sony at other stores. |

I wasn't aware that Amazon had done that. However they're still using a closed format, and they're still trying to use their products to push their productsby exclusion.
DRM I'm now less bothered than I once was. If it's got DRM then I view it as an inferior product, but if it's the book I want to read and it's a decent price then it's ok. |
