This is true, but it would be a bad idea to recommend an unsecured network as a "solution" to someone's connection problem. That was my meaning.

- there is no confidential data in shared folders on our home network & I strongly doubt that anyone wants to snoop our family photo collection :-)
it's much less hassle for visiting friends and family for us to have a wireless network that's easy to access, even though the family desktops & xbox are using wired Ethernet

The going concern is that someone may use your wireless network to do something that could land YOU in hot water... child pornography, hacking, etc... not that a hacker will steal something from you.

But yeah, I agree that people here are too quick to pounce on the; "Oh. My. God. You leave your wireless network unsecured!?!?" opportunity. It's just not that big of a deal. I especially enjoy leaving mine unsecured and then booting the freeloaders off when it seems like they're a long way into a particularly long download.

home routers have very limited range. If I scan for connections, I can just see my neighbors connections on either side, at v low signal levels. I''d behave differently in a big city.

It works, thanks for all the help. What worked was when I used tthe SN# for the network name and the WEP# for the password.

I do similar things with the dd-wrt firmware I run on my Linksys router. The fun is endless when you have such fine-grained control. The cable guy made the mistake of telling me he was using my wireless on his lunchbreak. He now gives me very dirty looks -- I'm guessing he doesn't like the random redirects.

Not necessarily. I have flat rate, more speed than I could ever use with my three comps and mobiles, so why don't allow others to connect to it? PCs are password protected, so no harm can be done, and I'm paying for flat rate and bandwidth anyway. So, a little bit of happiness for poorer neighbors and students passing by is not a bad idea.

It reminds me when in the lean times I used my neighbors WiFi connection for about a year. I tried to avoid heavy downloads so that he wouldn't get annoyed. It was some years ago and I think that today people are more strict about leaving open connections.

It's not impossible for people to PUT stuff (i.e., child porn, etc) on your computer through an unsecured wi-fi network even if you live in the country. If you're a city dweller, it's even riskier.
