To your Clarke list I would also add his novel The City And The Stars and two of his best short stories ever The Star And Rescue Party.

Also do not overlook Andre Norton. Her Ad Astra, Time Trader, and Forerunner series are all good.

And you might want to look at Olaf Stapledon as well.

There is an Australian science fiction book written in the 1930s which is online at Gutenberg Australia - http://gutenberg.net.au/ebooks06/0604821.txt - It's a few years since I've read it, but I always remember it as being so strange.

It involves an ordinary guy who is digging a well for a tank or something and he unearths an advanced civilisation - thousands of years old under the Earth. There is a woman who he can speak to somehow. Perhaps he wakes her out of some sort of sleep. I can't remember, but the whole thing is uncanny.

If you're interested in non-fiction on the subject you might like the book 1491: New Revelations of the Americas Before Columbus by Charles Mann. It's about the civilizations of the Americas, including the advanced civilizations in Mesoamerica, especially the Maya and the Aztec Empires and the Inca Empire in South America before the arrival of medieval European armies. There are many exciting discoveries about how the Indians managed the environment in North America and a new view of a thriving civilization in the Amazon.

The book is an easy read and includes many new archeological discoveries.

The City and the Stars is spot on! One of my all time favorites. Great suggestions.

I don't think I've read the follow-on novels. Tepper tends to be very repetitive with her plots so I often pass right on by her books these days. Grass was the first of her books that I read, and it is definitely in my top ten of all time, which is why I tend to be a bit bitter about some of her latest works.
