The first paragraph is a bit dated. Maybe time for an upgrade of the letter. I just dug mine out - same but dated Oct 2, 2010.

Got my two Kindles yesterday. Picked one, opened it, turned it on, manually registered its serial, then the two documents (welcome letter; transferring old Kindle content to new Kindle) queued up and got sent to it fine.
It looks like I have the plastic buttons. I'm pretty easygoing on my electronic devices, so it's unlikely I'll see wear/fading on the buttons, but we shall see with time. My page turn buttons on the left have a little more click in them. The back button on the right makes almost no noise if I press it at its lowest point. No big deal...I expect some variance in an electronic product that's as inexpensive as this. Like my wife's Kindle 2, every so often when I press page turn it doesn't do anything. It's so infrequent that I can't be sure if it's a software or hardware problem, because it's impossible for me to replicate. Nice device though. I like the slightly faster page turns, increased contrast, and extra font choices over the Kindle 2. The d-pad is a little harder to use than the Kindle 2's joystick though. It's because the left/right/up/down "frame" is so darn thin and tiny. Would've been better to make it more like a Nintendo controller. I've explored all the options on it so thoroughly that I think the only thing left to do is, er, start using it for reading. Which yes, I did actually do some of last night and this morning. ![]() Thanks to everyone for their help and input, -HM |

If you don't care about hacks then you should install the 3.1 firmware. It fixes some bugs and adds some new features but does alter the appearance of the location bar whilst you're reading. There are plenty of threads about it on here so just read through those. I assume that your Kindle came with 3.0.2? |

My buttons are a hard plastic, and I've gotten the impression from what I've read that the "clay" buttons are rubbery.
The lack of page turn is really infrequent. So much so that I keep thinking maybe I haven't pushed the button. I cannot replicate it, at all, so maybe I'm insane. I have small fingers and also have used things like Blackberry keyboards, so using the d-pad isn't a big problem, but I do feel the design of it could've been better. It has 3.0.2. I've had the wi-fi/3g on for a bit and the update hasn't automatically come down, like it apparently has for some. About the only thing I'd jailbreak it for is putting my own screensavers on, but it isn't the biggest deal, so I'll probably download and run the 3.1 update. I'll survive without seeing the location on every page. -HM |

It takes ages for Amazon to do the auto update for everybody as they do it in batches. |

The keyboard buttons are basically the same as the rest of the Kindle bezel.
As I suspected, it doesn't like the secure wi-fi at my office, so now I can feel less bad about spending the extra $50 for the 3G. -HM |

Here's a thread I made about the button textures. I included a photo, although the difference is hard to make out in the photo. Pay close attention to the Back button to see it best.

Here's mine. Not the crispest picture, but probably good enough for someone who's seen both kinds to determine which mine is:

It looks like the glossy version to me.

That's what I think. They're basically the same material as the rest of the Kindle.
Has anyone yet determined if one resists wear better than the other? From looking at all the threads, I can't come to any conclusions. -HM |
