If one of the free dictionaries work, then perhaps there is something wrong with Merriam-Webster's Collegiate Dictionary. Some dictionaries use features that are not supported by the Java MobiPocket Reader, but all are supposed to support lookup.

I suppose I will try what I am about to ask but I'll mention it anyway.

In order to access memory it appears to me I will have to remove the card and then set the default locations for everything to memory. I can probably rename the backup folder and create a new one so that the backup files are secure. Maybe I don't need to remove the card or mess with reorganizing the backup folder on the PC but it seems to be the prudent thing to do. Then I can connect to the iLiad and the PC will recognize memory as the default drive and I can move the dictionary to it.

The assumption for the above actions is that without shell access I can't see the memory location with it set to the card. Is that a fair assumption? I do plan to get the developers package but I don't want to add another variable to the equation.

Since as you suggest memory may fix the problem I will try my paid dictionary before going to the free versions.

Really big question - Can I leave the book default to the card with the dictionary in memory or does this mean I have to default books to memory in order for it to recognize the dictionary? Thanks

To access the internal memory via USB goto page 3 of settings and select it there.

I don't think this has anything to do with where the books key takes you, although I'm not certain. On the internal memory, if there isn't already a Mobipocket subdirectory in books, make one and copy the dictionary into it.

I forgot about the internal memory via USB option. It was in my head that the file location set the access location. Of course if one chooses different access locations it makes sense to have the option to choose the access location one wants to use with the PC connection.

It worked! I put the dictionary I bought into the correct memory location and then went into a mobipocket book. The eyeglass or whatever is now highlighted. I chose it, touched a word with the stylus and it brought up the dictionary. Even though some people have said the dictionary can be located on the card it appears the memory card for the dictionary still is the best choice. Thank you very much wallcraft and you too montsnmags.

I have 3 different dictionaries loaded on my CF card and they all work at the same time if I click on a word in a Mobipocket book. I put the dictionaries in the CF card's books/Mobipocket folder.

The dictionaries will only work on the CF card if I never open any of them from contentlister - as they'll create a new folder and become inaccessible for lookups. This is not a problem - now that I know that what caused them to stop working!

I tried to do what worked for you but could not get it to work. I guess people can first try the approach you took if they prefer having it on the card. If it fails they know the memory option will probably work.
