3.1 is so clearly better than 3.0.2 and 3.0.3 that it didn't need a long beta.

Amazon's communications strategy on updates is stingy. They could learn something about that from Calibre. Or even (getting on my asbestos suit) Microsoft.

You're just getting the specific 3.1 update that takes you from 3.0.3 to 3.1. The one you download from the website internally has an update for 3.0->3.1, 3.0.1->3.1, 3.0.2->3.1 and 3.0.3->3.1.

Run them in the order reverse of which you installed them in.

(If you uninstall the Jailbreak first, you won't be able to uninstall the Screensavers unless you reinstall Jailbreak)

You can leave the files there if you ever plan to get the screensavers back in the future (perhaps when 3.1 is jailbroken); just make sure that you delete them if you send it to Amazon CS. Of course, you can always delete the entire linkss folder immediately after uninstall.

Factory reset doesn't remove the extra files that the hacks add or the files that are modified. The Kindle doesn't keep a backup copy of the firmware.

Just today I downloaded the 3.1 Beta version to my PC and sent it to the Kindle's root directory via USP. Once there, it installed itself automatically without prompting and rebooted the Kindle. That seemed a bit strange, as always before when I manually installed the bin file I had to cycle through the menus (Menu >Settings >Menu) and click on the "Update your Kindle" selection. But 3.1 is showing as the current version, and the "Update your Kindle" option is grayed-out.

Hmmm....

I removed the screensaver and jailbreak this morning but only after a scare with a very prominent error screen that the "update" (UNinstall) did not work. Hidden in that screen was to press R to use the kindle. I had tried using a newer version of the UNinstall than the one I had installed.

But I've got wifi off and am debating the upgrade versus screensavers of my choice.

Hmmm....

Now we can start a rumor that 3.1 will be the final update for K3- that MUST be why the update option is grayed-out of the menu!

I am not going to do a Factory Reset on my K3 to test it out but....When I was preparing my wife's K2 to return for warranty replacement the factory reset removed the jailbreak, screensaver, and font hacks as well as all the folders the hacks created and when it restarted was just as it was when we recieved it from Amazon.

There were no books or collections on it at all.

No idea about the K2 but the K3 factory reset doesn't touch the firmware itself and just blows away your settings and contents of the Kindle user store. Some of the hacks which rely on files or directories within the user store will get disabled when this happens but the parts within the firmware area stay there.

The script that gets called to do the factory reset is /usr/sbin/factory_reset

It does the following steps:

1. Stops all the apps.
2. Deletes the test/diagnostic files.
3. Resets the 3G modem to automatically select the correct network.
4. Deletes the contents of /var/local which is where settings are stored.
5. Deletes the contents of /mnt/us which is your user store and what you see when you plug in your Kindle in USB drive mode.
6. Disables diagnostics.
7. Sets the flag that signifies that this Kindle is from the factory and empty.
8. Turns itself off or restarts as requested.

I came here to research 3.1, my dad noticed today that his page locations were missing. It turns out his Kindle updated to 3.1 without his knowledge. His custom screen savers still work.

Just read the first page, so it's impossible to uninstall the screen saver hack from his updated Kindle now? He loves the custom screens but losing the option sucks!

Well, technically as long as you have USB network up, you can still do whatever you want, just not by the usual uninstall script/"upgrade" menu route (unless you substitute Amazon's prod keyfile ?)

So very dangerous, yes, but its not impossible.

So is the consensus that if you want the jailbreak and screensaver hacks, it's best to install them prior to upgrading to 3.1?

I've been holding off on installing them because... errr, I'm technologically timid. But if it's now or never, then perhaps I'd better steel myself and try :-)
